Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general supervision performs a variety of kitchen duties involved with cooking and preparing hot foods, cold foods, and beverages for a single location within a large residential cooking environment. Executes day-to-day activities including cleaning work areas, washing dishes, equipment, and utensils; set up, service and collection of garbage. Operates computer to ensure residents are accounted for at each meal period.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • At the direction of the Kitchen Manager, carries out established Food Service processes and procedures in alignment with UGMTC’s mission and values.
  • Prepares and serves a range including hot and cold meat and vegetable dishes, salads, sandwiches, simple bakery items, beverages and other similar food items.
  • Adjusts the established menu when perishable items are donated.
  • Follows standard procedures for kitchen safety and safe food handling.
  • Conveys food and supplies from kitchen to service area.
  • Replenishes food, silverware, dishes, and trays at serving stations.
  • Assists with cleaning and maintaining work areas, including floors, facilities, utensils, and equipment; collects and places garbage in designated containers.
  • Assists with washing and sanitizing pots, pans, and other serviceware ensuring sanitary handling; organizes and replaces serviceware to appropriate location.
  • Attends to day-to-day problems and needs concerning equipment and food supplies; detects and ensures disposal of spoiled food. Brings defective supplies, equipment, and other unusual conditions to the attention of the Kitchen Manager.
  • Provides a welcoming and safe environment for residents, staff and volunteers.
  • Works with volunteers to ensure proper food handling, safety procedures and service to residents.
  • Maintains co-operative relationships and communication with team and other departments to ensure access and positive experiences for UGMTC residents and achievement of program objectives.
  • Supports the Christian values and ethics of UGMTC with residents, staff, and volunteers.
  • Participates in UGMTC sponsored spiritual enrichment activities, including staff prayer and devotions.
  • At any time, with or without notice, performs other duties and activities as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience; Culinary Arts degree preferred
  • 1 year of cooking experience in an institutional environment or restaurant; additional cooking experience preferred
  • ServSafe or equivalent certification within 60 days of date of hire
  • Able to work flexible hours, which may include early mornings, evenings, and holidays or weekend.
  • Experience or desire to work with individuals experiencing mental health issues, homelessness, poverty, or addiction.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Support UGMTC’s statement of Christian faith and has desire to share that faith, prayer and knowledge with staff and program participants. Ability to demonstrate this in word and deed by supporting the ministry of UGMTC, attending a local church and commitment to personal prayer and study of the Bible.
  • Knowledge of Food Service line set-up and temperature requirements.
  • Knowledge of food preparation and presentation methods, techniques, and quality standards.
  • Good judgment, self-control, and professional boundaries
  • Ability to read, understand, use, and follow safety and other specific instructions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of issues impacting people experiencing homelessness, underserved or at-risk communities.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a culturally diverse community.
  • Team and customer service oriented; works collaboratively with staff in the coordination of Food Service activities.
  • Follow program guidelines and offer suggestions for improvement.
  • Ability to read, write and follow routine verbal and written instructions.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
  • Work is normally performed in a kitchen environment. Will be exposed to temperature extremes.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds consistently, occasionally lift over 30 pounds.
  • Work is in cafeteria environments with exposure to temperature fluctuation, kitchen hazards, and varying conditions.
  • Work requires standing for long periods of time and repetitive movements.
  • Work requires pushing, pulling, reaching, crouching, depth perception, stooping, standing, walking, twisting, carrying, and other physical activities.
  • Moderate exposure to physical risk, which require following basic safety precautions.
