Summary: The Food Pantry Manager supports the safe operation of the Food Pantry by overseeing the pantry assistants and volunteers in their daily activities, ensuring that over 15,000 guests each year are treated with respect and dignity, and receive a high level of customer service.

Essential Functions:

  • Supports the daily operations of the Food Pantry, leading by example and maintaining a safe and clean facility.
  • Ensures adequate staff and volunteer coverage for pantry operations.
  • Collaborates with the COO on the development and implementation of the volunteer program as determined by agency goals.
  • Plans and implements recognition program for volunteers throughout the year as needed.
  • Works with the COO to hire and train the pantry assistant team. Provides ongoing and annual performance evaluations for all pantry assistants.
  • Collaborates with procurement staff to ensure staff and volunteers are properly trained to efficiently serve guests, while following established compliance and safety protocols. Coordinates on-site training for staff and volunteers in accordance with JFS and USDA policies.
  • Maintains volunteer schedules, including accurate record of hours of service along with onboarding documentation.
  • Evaluates and analyzes program outputs and outcomes to provide feedback to the PQI committee on volunteer recruitment, satisfaction, and retention.
  • Compiles monthly reporting to entities providing food, maintaining accurate guest records, and preparation for annual USDA/TEFAP/CSFP site visits.
  • Registers new and existing guests, shops with and for guests, and inspects, sorts and stocks food as needed.
  • Addresses guest and volunteer concerns in a timely and appropriate manner.

  • Demonstrates teamwork and support of the JFS mission and values.
  • Complies with all JFS policies and standards.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in social work, nonprofit administration, or related experience required.

Work Experience: Experience in staff and/or volunteer recruitment, training, and supervision.

Licenses, Certifications and Professional Affiliations: ServSafe Certification.

Work Environment: Work is typically performed in a warehouse/Food Pantry environment, as well as other offsite locations. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.

Physical Demands: This position requires an above average amount of physical effort including standing, lifting, and carrying light to moderately heavy products or equipment, up to 50 pounds and/or sometimes prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Travel: Travel may be required for meetings with individuals and/or groups throughout the St. Louis area.
