Overview
The purpose of the Core Fluid Dynamics Engineer position is to provide a central Fluid Dynamics analysis role within the company that provides technical expertise by being able to design, analyze and predict aerodynamic or hydraulic performance for Elliott's products. This support is provided to a variety of internal departments including, but not limited to, New Apparatus (NA) and Engineered Solution Regional Application Engineering, Core Application Engineering, Design Automation and Programming, Research and Development, Product Engineering, and Drafting to achieve the best solutions for Elliott.
Core Fluid Dynamics has technically oriented subject matter experts who cover various Elliott product lines such as axial compressors, centrifugal compressors, cryogenic expanders, cryogenic pumps, hot gas expanders, pumps, and steam turbines. The specialized product line(s) will vary per Core Fluid Dynamics Engineer, but their functions will be similar.
Responsibilities
Generally, the specific job responsibilities/competencies listed below are comprehensive considering all product lines covered by Core Fluid Dynamics and will vary to some degree based on each respective product line’s organizational status and needs.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and ensure work output maintains safety standards for those utilizing that output.
  • Maintain an environment for professional and ethical conduct within the group as directed by Elliott corporate policies, Elliott Code of Ethics, and Engineering Ethics.
  • Promote a positive attitude for a safe and healthy work environment and awareness for high quality products and services from Elliott.
  • Develop and maintain technical expertise for the assigned product line(s).
  • Provides technical expertise by being able to design, analyze and predict aerodynamic or hydraulic performance for Elliott's products.
  • Designs new or modifies existing aero or hydraulic stages and other flow path components as assigned for improved product performance.
  • Develops and improves design, analysis, performance prediction, and application computational tools.
  • Independently plans, prepares and executes experimental programs for the development of new or existing products, factory tests, design procedures, and issues applicable documentation.
  • Provides specialized technical information and support, related to product aerodynamic or hydraulic performance, to other groups as needed.
  • Maintains awareness of new and state-of-the-art technology, competitive intelligence, and new turbo machinery applications/user requirements.
  • Provides innovative and original ideas, collaborates with corporate patent department on new turbo machinery application/user requirements, and submits technical papers for publication.
  • Continually review test data to ensure the best possible accuracy of prediction tools.
  • Review and respond to proposal related activities where the NA Regional AE requests support for unique, unfamiliar, and/or challenging situations (and occasionally for more routine situations):
  • Develop the best solutions for Elliott, such as design of high efficiency or low-cost equipment selections, in order to achieve the most competitive offer to our customers.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to Regional AE’s for a considerable number areas such as feasibility / budgetary / firm selections, non-typical applications (i.e. non-typical working fluid, configurations, conditions, etc.), engineering calculations, engineering analyses, proper application of products or product components, specification reviews including understanding of customer requirements, conducting fluid dynamic performance and mechanical design analyses including risk identification and mitigation, curve generation, technical support during quote and bid clarifications phases, answering technical questions from sales and customers, design specification generation, etc.
  • Review Engineering Authorization requests for use of non-standard features, application beyond component limits, or significant modification of a standard component and provide comment.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to Regional AEs in the application of newly released-for-sale R&D projects such as new components, concepts, programs, features, calculation methods, analysis methods, etc.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to Regional AEs in the application of unreleased-for-sale R&D projects and work with AE, other departments, and management to develop solutions and identify risks and mitigations.
  • Support new product offerings by reviewing R&D projects and implementing into work processes when ready:
  • Provide input to R&D project development, especially with regards to required outputs, and to challenge the project results to ensure that they meet standards necessary for successful utilization by proposal personnel (which oftentimes also supports order execution personnel due to overlapping areas).
  • Interface with R&D to understand the project and make recommendations that best serve Elliott.
  • Testing of new R&D programs or tools.
  • Actively participate and represent Fluid Dynamics interests in project meetings such as design reviews and FMEA’s.
  • Implement tools, processes, documentation, etc. to transition new projects from R&D to being released for global use.
  • Act in a lead or support role relative to Core Design Automation and Programming (DAP) activities:
  • Act as a gatekeeper for Trouble Reports and Enhancement Requests for various major eShell programs (CompShell, TurbShell, etc.).
  • Support worldwide users and Core programmer to address various eShell requests: proper program usage and navigation, bugs, troubleshooting, testing, identification of process improvement opportunities, etc.
  • Assist Core DAP and Application Engineering in the review, development, and/or revision of code and rules.
  • Develop or improve automation of procedures and calculations.
  • Create and maintain documentation owned by the group (Forms, Work Instructions, and Engineering Transmittals etc.).
  • Execute special projects or activities, ranging from short to long duration (i.e., less than a day to multiple years), as directed by management and in support of company objectives.
  • Coordinate, collaborate, and/or consult with other departments when areas outside of Core Fluid Dynamics expertise is necessary to ensure proper execution of activities.
  • Train new members of the group.
  • Actively participate in shop order design reviews and complete assigned actions as requested.
  • Support order execution personnel as requested.
  • Knowledge, understanding, and proper use and application of various Core Engineering tools.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, guidance, and direction for less experienced engineers.
  • Additional responsibilities as a manager:
  • Establish and maintain technical expertise of the group with appropriate actions (hiring, mentoring, training, etc.).
  • Contribute individually to the technical expertise of the group.
  • Supervise, motivate, and direct the day-to-day activities of the group.
  • Coordinate with other Core Engineering Managers to ensure alignment of activities and hand offs within the team.
  • Convey and meet requirements established by higher management.
  • Communicate to management group status and performance relative to goals, etc.
Qualifications
  • For the Senior Engineer level, a Master of Science degree in an engineering curriculum with specialized training and experience in turbo machinery design and analysis with 15+ years of relevant experience in turbo machinery.
  • A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field is required for more junior levels with 2+ years of experience.
  • Mastery in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics
  • Ability to apply commercially analytical tools (1D, 2D, 3D fluid dynamic analysis programs) to create designs or resolve performance problems.
  • Understanding the importance of pre-contract agreements, contractual requirements, and Elliott’s ability to meet those commitments during project execution while maintaining schedule and budget.
  • Basic understanding of, and the ability to interpret, technical drawings.
  • Software proficiency:
  • Google Workspace applications: Mail / Calendar / Chat
  • MS Excel / Windows / Power point
  • Familiarity with CAD
  • Familiarity with Industry CFD Tools
Preferred Requirements:
  • Professional Engineering license
  • Relevant experience in turbo machinery
