Job description

This Job Post Has Been Updated/Edited on 3/22/24: We have received multiple applicants for the Store Clerk/Florist Apprentice Position. Due to the number of applicants we are pausing our search and reviewing the submitted applications. We will no longer be accepting new applicants for the training position at this time. Thank you to all who applied.

WE WILL CONTINUE TO ACCEPT APPLICATIONS FOR FLORAL DESIGNERS WITH EXPERIENCE.

Are you the designer we are looking for?

Who we are: At McLeod, we believe that floral arrangements are more than just flowers in a vase; we believe they can be an expression of one's heart. Customer service and quality of our flowers have been our top priorities since 1902. We have many life long customers who have been with us for decades. Our clients trust us to listen to their needs and make them something beautiful. We truly value the loyalty of our customers and continue to bring the best flowers to the Concord community.

We believe that floral design is an art and Floral Designers are artists. We don’t want to limit your creativity as an artist. The floral industry is constantly growing and changing and as a business we must adapt and evolve with the times. As designers, we must be willing to learn new styles, new techniques, and explore different creative opportunities as they arrive.

We are willing to train the right designer if they are lacking professional experience, but understand the basics and have a strong eye for design.

We are seeking a creative individual with these traits prioritized in order:

1. Reliability: Can we count on you? Life happens, people get sick, cars break down, families have destination weddings…we get it - We are human, we understand and we are flexible! However, we need someone reliable, because we are a small staff. One missing person can have a chain reaction and greatly affect the efficiency of the store and the quality of our customer service. Sometimes the storefront gets busy, you will need to go out front and help customers. We need someone dependable, responsible and a team player. If there is a problem, we work together to solve it. If you need help, you can count on us. Can we count on you?

2. Criticism: Can you take constructive criticism? Are you willing to learn more regardless of your experience? It does not matter if you have 1 year of design or 30 - you can always learn more and design better. Are you open to learning new styles, new methods, can you take constructive criticism? As a business, we sell a product and we want to have consistency in the arrangements we are selling. That might involve some changes to your style or technique...are you okay with that?

3. Floral Portfolio: Examples of previous work. We require some examples of your skill. We need to see if you have an understanding of materials, attention to detail, and your style of design. During an interview we will require you to make several pieces to see your skill in person.

4. “Daily Orders”: The skill to complete smaller everyday arrangements. Half of our work is everyday “Get Well” “Happy Birthday” “Thinking of you Arrangements” We are currently part of Teleflora. Our goal is to leave Teleflora to create our own designs and recipes - however that is a great undertaking. Until that time comes, can you replicate the Teleflora images? Can you enhance the Teleflora designs with your own artistic flair so our customers are not only satisfied, but think “wow this is way better than this photoshopped image!” Can you make “designer’s choice” for a range of different price points?

5. Red Rose Bouquet: Can you make a dozen roses with greenery in a vase quickly and efficiently? Have you worked for Valentine’s Day? We need speed, attention to detail. Ability to green and flower quickly and efficiently for busier times. YOU WILL HAVE TO HUSTLE!

6. Mechanics: (Required) Standard Vases, Greening, Grid Taping (We Are Willing to Train) Bouquet Wraps, Oasis Foam, Corsages, Boutonnieres, Bridal Bouquets, Standing Spray, Casket Sprays, Installation Work.

7. Different Style Experience: We don’t have a specific style - we do everything. It is important that our designers have the knowledge of how to create multiple styles to meet the diverse needs of our customers. Be that traditional, contemporary, high end design, boho, roundy-moundy, loose and flowy, and of course the newest style/latest trend.

8. Customer Service: We need a designer with great communication skills who can listen to our customers and understand what our clients are looking for. Sometimes we need to “read between the lines” when our customers aren’t quite sure what to say.

9. Clean & Detail Oriented: Flowers are a dirty job and it can get chaotic in the shop. Are you clean, organized, and have great attention to detail?

10. Flower Care: Experience working with different flowers and understanding of the different tips and tricks to maintain their lifespan.

11. Computer Skills: We are part of the Dove Network and we use RTI. It is a very user-unfriendly system and you will need to be somewhat proficient in computers to be able to enter orders.

Positive Attitude: This is a requirement and it might be the most important one. We need a staff member that brings positive energy to our team!
