What you will do:

What you will need:
  • High School Diploma or equivalency + completion of approved EMT-Paramedic course that utilizes the D.O.T. EMT-P course guidelines
  • ICS 100-200-700-800 complete within 12 months of hire date.
  • 3-4 years experience in the 911 arena as an EMT-Paramedic working as an Advanced Life Support Provider
  • Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic - Wisconsin (EMT-P)
  • Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic - Minnesota (EMT-P MN)
  • Iowa Paramedic License (EMT-P IA) required within 60 days of hire date
  • National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (NREMT-P)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Current Infant-Adult Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (with hands on learning) from one of the following programs; American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Flight Paramedic Certified (FP-C) within 24 months of hire date
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required within 18 months of hire
  • Basic Life Support for Obstetrics (BLSO) or Advanced Life Support for Obstetrics (ALSO) within 18 months of hire
  • Transport Professional Advanced Trauma Course (TPATC) within 18 months of hire

Job Description:
The Flight Paramedic functions as an advanced trained paramedic able to provide critical care in the medical transport of critically ill and injured patients. The Flight Paramedic skills may involve multiple life saving procedures. The role requires an autonomous practice and the ability to follow and deliver care by the use of existing medical protocols. The Flight Paramedic is recognized as an individual who is a trained professional and an expert in recognizing and intervening in life-threatening emergencies.
Major Responsibilities:
1. Participate in the monitoring and improving of safe air medical and ground transport operations.
2. Work with the Flight Nurse in a team environment sharing patient care duties and operational responsibilities.
3. Responsible for thorough knowledge of the Gundersen AIR policies and procedures, and shall meet operational and clinical goals and objectives;
  • prepare for shift duties by being in uniform and flight ready;
  • receive off going medical crew brief when starting and give the brief when leaving;
  • count and sign off narcotics, exchange crew items (i.e. keys and radios) at change of shift;
  • inspect equipment and on-board supply inventories at beginning of the work shift;
  • assure proper maintenance and retrieval of Gundersen AIR equipment;
  • maintain a clean patient transport environment, including all medical equipment and supplies;
  • restock equipment and supplies immediately following each transport;
  • complete monthly duties as assigned at the beginning of the shift;
  • operate communications equipment professionally;
  • assure safety of crew, patients, and all other functioning in and around the aircraft;
  • respond promptly to Gundersen AIR pages (requests for response);
  • perform all Gundersen AIR missions including ground and rotorcraft as assigned

4. Participate in all functions of flight operations to include, pre-mission briefings, pre-mission liftoff checklist, assists the pilot as requested inflight (i.e., radio, navigation, visual observation day/night NVG), mission debriefings and completes necessary documentation. General helicopter operations and safety, demonstrate aviation map reading skills, plotting coordinates as well as GPS operation.
5. Participates in all the functions of the patient care;
  • obtain and exchange pertinent information with nurses, physicians, paramedics, EMT's or first responders at healthcare facilities/accident scenes involved with patient transfers;
  • assess patient condition to determine nature and extent of illness or trauma and to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed; incorporate knowledge of patient's physical and psychosocial development into planning intervention for quality patient care;
  • load and secure the patient and equipment into the transport vehicle;
  • collaborate with the nurse in the development of care for the patient during the transfer, by anticipating the patient's needs, medications, equipment, clinical instruments and supplies;
  • provide patient care during transport and medical intervention using established protocols;
  • operate with proficiency various types of medical equipment and ALS/critical care procedures included in Gundersen AIR's medical protocols;
  • communicates with the receiving facility via aircraft radio to prepare the emergency department for the arrival of the transfer and/or speak to medical control;
  • transfer patients from the transport vehicle to various hospital departments and provide nurses and/or physicians with a patient report of clinical interventions, responses and medical condition;
  • provide reassurance, education and emotional support to patients (and their family when assessable);
  • restocks and cleans helicopter after each transport to ensure readiness;
  • complete a patient record maintaining comprehensive and accurate documentation on the patient's condition and care rendered;
  • call healthcare facilities or EMS and provide nurses/physicians/paramedics/EMTs with a post-transport follow-up report on the patient's medical condition during the transfer.

6. Assist as an air medical resource when transporting the neonate team.
7. Develop and maintain patient care skills necessary to practice advanced levels of trauma care, critical care, and transport of critically ill or injured patients. Demonstrate advanced trauma skills including intubation, needle thoracic decompression, surgical and needle cricothyrotomy, central and peripheral intravenous access and pericardial proficiency.
8. Maintain positive communication with outlying referral centers in regards to patient care and related concerns. Develop ongoing relationships and outreach education with area hospitals and emergency services.
9. Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals, other literature and attending related seminars.
10. Participate in quality improvement activities in order to continuously improve patient care, health care outcomes, and operations.
11. Chair/co-chair/assist in the daily activities of one of the Gundersen AIR committees (i.e., CAMTS, QA, Marketing, Education, Safety, Supply, Data Collections, etc.).
12. Shall be prepared and prompt in reporting for scheduled shifts as assigned supporting continuity of service through flexibility in scheduling and assignment.
13. Attend Gundersen AIR staff meetings and educational sessions.
14. Complete other duties assigned.
Education and Learning:
REQUIRED
High School Diploma or equivalency + completion of approved EMT-Paramedic course that utilizes the D.O.T. EMT-P course guidelines
ICS 100-200-700-800 complete within 12 months of hire date.
DESIRED
Associate degree in a health related field
Work Experience:
REQUIRED
3-4 years experience in the 911 arena as an EMT-Paramedic working as an Advanced Life Support Provider
DESIRED
1 year Interfacility transport experience or Critical Care transport experience or air medical transportation.
License and Certifications:
