Job Summary

Flexographic Laminator Operator plays a crucial role in the production of printed and laminated materials, and their ability to maintain equipment, ensure quality, and troubleshoot issues directly impacts the company's output and customer satisfaction. It's important for this operator to have a strong understanding of flexographic printing and laminating processes, as well as a commitment to safety and quality.

Essential Job Functions

  • Machine Setup: Prepare the flexographic laminating equipment for production, including installing the appropriate printing plates, adjusting rollers, and ensuring proper tension settings. Select the correct adhesive, substrates, and inks for the job, and load them into the machine. Set up the machine to achieve the desired print and lamination specifications, such as colors, register, and print quality.
  • Quality Control: Conduct quality checks on printed and laminated materials at the start of each run and periodically throughout production. Monitor the print and lamination process to ensure consistent, high-quality output. Adjust the machine settings as needed to maintain quality standards and troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
  • Printing and Laminating: Operate the flexographic laminating machine to print images or text onto various substrates, such as packaging materials, labels, or flexible packaging. Ensure proper lamination of materials, adhering multiple layers together with adhesives or coatings as required. Monitor and control the speed and tension of the machine to prevent issues like wrinkling or misalignment.
  • Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on the flexographic laminating equipment, including cleaning, lubrication, and replacing worn parts. Address minor mechanical issues promptly to minimize downtime and maximize machine efficiency. Coordinate with maintenance technicians for more extensive repairs or adjustments.
  • Material Handling: Load and unload rolls of substrates, inks, and adhesives onto the machine. Safely handle and store chemicals and inks, following proper safety and environmental procedures. Maintain an organized and clean work area.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety guidelines and best practices to prevent accidents and ensure a safe working environment. Comply with industry regulations and company policies regarding the use of chemicals, inks, and waste disposal.
  • Documentation: Keep accurate records of job specifications, including settings, materials used, and production quantities. Complete production reports and paperwork as required by the company or quality control procedures.
  • Teamwork: Collaborate with other team members, such as machine assistants and quality control technicians, to ensure smooth production processes and meet production goals. Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members to address production issues and make improvements.
  • Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve issues that may affect the quality or efficiency of the production process. Troubleshoot machine malfunctions, such as print defects, web breaks, or registration problems.
  • Continuous Improvement: Seek opportunities to enhance productivity, reduce waste, and improve the quality of the laminated products. Suggest and implement process improvements and cost-saving measures.
  • Perform other duties as required or as requested by Supervisor or Manager.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, High school Diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Manual coordination and dexterity
  • Ability to use basic hand tools.
  • Basic Computer Skills
  • Basic Math Skills
  • Ability to read a tape measure to 1/16”

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent.
  • Previous experience operating flexographic laminating machinery is highly desirable.
  • Technical training or certification in printing or a related field is a plus.
  • Knowledge of safety policies and applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity for machine setup and adjustments.
  • Ability to lift and move materials and equipment, often up to 50 pounds.
  • Visual acuity for quality inspections.
  • Physical agility to perform routine maintenance tasks.
  • Ishihara machine eye exam for perfect color and hearing acuity within normal limits.

Typical environment of manufacturing and production facilities. Exposure includes but is not limited to continuous noise, scent of materials, bright workstations, machinery with moving parts.
