JOB INFORMATION
See NOTE(S) below for future wage increases and /or additional compensation opportunities.
Fleet Technician positions diagnose, maintain, repair and overhaul a variety of equipment including automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, boats, construction equipment, hydraulic equipment, fire equipment and industrial equipment; make preventive maintenance inspections; keep records of work performed; may do minor welding; and perform other duties as assigned.
NOTES:
  • Employees in job classifications represented by AFSME Local 127 are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:

4% effective 7/1/24
2% effective 1/1/25
5% effective 7/1/25
  • In addition to the scheduled general wage increases, the following special salary wage increase is also scheduled to take effect for Fleet Technician:

5% effective 1/1/25
5% effective 1/1/26
  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Fleet Technician employees may be required to work an extended period of night or unusual shift work for which they may receive additional pay.
  • Fleet Technician employees who possess Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications may be eligible to receive additional pay.
  • Fleet Technician employees who obtain and maintain the California Fire Mechanic Academy Master's Certification Level III may receive additional pay.
  • Fleet Technician employees who operate commercial vehicles are required by California State Law, as a condition of employment, to submit to drug and alcohol testing. Prior to hire, a background check will be completed in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse and with former employers regarding drug and alcohol testing results.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: You must meet ONE of the following options:
1. Successful completion of a state-accredited four-year Equipment Mechanic Apprenticeship Program.
2. Four years of full-time journey-level experience as an Equipment Mechanic. Qualifying experience MUST include the maintenance, diagnosis, repair and overhaul of the following equipment:
  • Gas or diesel engines.
  • Drivetrain systems.
  • Manual or automatic transmission systems.
  • Hydraulic or air brake systems.
  • Electrical or electronic systems.
  • Ignition systems.
  • Suspension parts.
3. An equivalent combination of experience and apprenticeship training as specified above equaling four years.
NOTE:
  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.
NOTE:
  • Some Fleet Technician positions may require a valid California Class A or B Driver License with Hazardous Materials and Tank Endorsements, or Class M Driver License within six months from date of hire.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
  • Possession of a valid California Class A or B Driver License with Hazardous Materials and Tank Endorsements or Class M Driver License.
  • Computer-related experience as it relates to equipment maintenance programs.
  • Possession of a valid Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in Automotive, Light Truck or Medium/Heavy Truck.
  • Experience repairing and maintaining industrial equipment, fire equipment, large internal combustion engines and/or stationary and truck-mounted AC power plants and high-pressure breathing air systems.
  • Possession of a valid Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification; Fire Mechanic Level I, II or III Certification; Smog License, and/or an American Welding Society (AWS) Welding Certification.

SCREENING PROCESS

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes applicable to this position, which may include the following: confirmation of citizenship or legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review and exam (which may include drug and alcohol testing); reference checks; and fingerprinting. Fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report. Certain positions may require additional screening processes, including a polygraph examination and/or background investigation. All screening processes must be successfully completed before employment begins. A positive test result for alcohol, cannabis/marijuana, illegal drugs, or inadequately explained prescription drugs, or misrepresentation, falsification, or omission of pertinent facts in any step of the screening or selection process, may constitute cause for disqualification or termination of employment.
