Job description


The City of Beaverton's Public Works department is seeking a Fleet Services Technician to perform a variety of routine and preventative maintenance procedures and inspections on city vehicles and equipment. The Fleet division keeps the city's vehicles in good working order, maintaining and repairing everything from police cruisers to sweet sweepers.
This is a full-time, non-exempt, SEIU-classified, and DOT-covered position. There is one vacancy. Individuals in this position will be subject to random drug screens and breath alcohol tests in accordance with DOT guidelines.

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and inspection of city vehicles and equipment, including changing oil and filters, mounting and balancing tires, checking safety equipment, suspension, and drive train systems. Repair flat tires, replace bulbs or fuses, jump start vehicles.
  • Diagnose and perform routine repairs and adjustments to transmission, brake, air conditioning and electrical and charging systems. Test drive vehicles.
  • Perform routine diagnosis of police vehicles and police equipment.
  • Assist in developing and implementing preventative maintenance processes, best practices, and efficiencies.
  • Assist other mechanics in performing corrective maintenance of all city vehicles, including diagnosis.
  • Conduct emergency service calls in the field. Diagnose problems and make repairs or adjustments, as appropriate, or coordinate safe vehicle removal for further diagnostics.
  • Perform administrative duties related to maintenance, including completing electronic work orders, ordering the necessary parts, and maintaining stock inventory.
  • Clean and maintain shop facility, workspace, and equipment. Perform visual inspection of equipment used for daily job duties for safety and functionality and report issues to Technician Lead.
  • Provide excellence in internal and external customer service. Create a positive experience for customers through professional and courteous behavior and creative problem resolution.
  • Act with respect and integrity, promote, and support diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Develop safe work habits and follow all required safety policies, procedures, and techniques. Contribute to safety of self, co-workers, and the general public.
  • Additional duties are outlined in the Fleet ServicesTechnician 1 class specification.
Minimum qualifications:
  • Associate's degree in automotive/diesel technology, or
  • Completion of an accredited two-year automotive/diesel trade school; and
  • One year of experience in a full-service fleet maintenance and repair facility that included diesel and combustion engines; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.
Licensing and special requirements
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet the city's driving standards.
  • Commercial Driver's License-B (CDL-B) with air brake and tank endorsements within 360 days of hire
  • Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Refrigerant Recovery certificate within six months of hire.
  • Certified in forklift operation within six months of hire.
  • Criminal Justice Information Service fingerprints must be completed and cleared prior to start date.
  • Ability to pass reference checks and education verification, and satisfy the requirements of a background check, including fingerprints.
  • Ability to satisfy the requirements of a pre-employment drug screen.

Starting rate will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience to the position within the posted wage range.
