Job description

The Fleet Manager maximizes gross utilization of company equipment by understanding the needs of the companies within Eskimos Inc.  Ensures equipment is ready and able to meet obligations and that the condition and reliability of the equipment meets Company expectations.  Implements systems, procedures, and policies leading to improvement in management, control, and execution of maintenance and equipment functions that achieve specific objectives

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Equipment Deployment

  • Work with the individual subsidiaries to insure that the needs of individual projects are met.

  • Work closely with the Logistics Department to insure timely delivery and retrieval of equipment from both remote and "and the road system" locations.

  • Prepare an equipment usage plan and presents to Management for approval.

  • Equipment deployment will take into account other 3rd party rental opportunities, as well as company owned equipment.

Preventative Maintenance (PM) Program

  • Ensure timely completion of required PMs

  • Develop and oversee PM program in accordance with Manufacturers' recommendations and operational experience (i.e., best practices).

  • Ensure that PM is scheduled and completed on-time consistent with the PM Program.

  • Review and validate completion and quality of PMs

  • Schedule and notify active users of upcoming PMs, notify stakeholders as appropriate. 

 Fleet Maintenance Operations

  • Hold regular meetings with assigned staff to establish priorities.

  • Travel to various projects in order to verify equipment condition and use.  Includes periodic travel to Barrow to inspect shop and equipment based from there.

  • Ensure optimal use of maintenance resources and minimize equipment downtime.

  • Recommend equipment to place in inactive status and/or for surplus.

  • Ensure that active equipment maintains an overall readiness consistent with business needs.

  • Reviews and approves (within authority) repair estimates.

  • Reports on repair activity.

  • Assesses equipment condition and grades in order to identify equipment needing significant refurbishment or replacement.

  • Reviews and approves Observation of Damage Notices.

  • Maintains a list of repairs (labor and parts estimates) for inactive equipment in order to plan for timely reactivation, as needed

  • Reviews any significant repairs (as defined by guidelines) with GM.

  • Monitor work in progress, and repair quality.

  • Review with projects, on a regular basis, all maintenance activity, both routine and breakdown, so that the knowledge can be utilized advantageously.

  • Investigate re-work, and come back work, for root cause, and cure.

  • Track repairs and expenses for rental equipment.

Equipment Acquisitions

  • Work with the individual subsidiaries to the needs and requirements of each construction group.

  • Work with Management to develop and execute a Capital Expense plan for the acquisition of equipment.

  • Present a report to upper management on each equipment acquisition for approval.

 Administration

  • Ensure warranty work is filed for reimbursement.

  • Complete Incident Reports and Spill Reports as required.

  • Ensure regulatory compliance, i.e. DOT Reg.'s and Crane Reg.'s.

  • Approve and authorize purchase requests and PO's.

  • Observe and report on recommended shop staffing levels to the GM.

  • Ensure personnel adhere to safety and environmental procedures, and regulations.

  • Perform periodic shop inspections.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge and experience constructing projects for Federal and State Government agencies, such as U.S. Corps of Engineers, U.S. Air Force, and Alaska DOT.

  • Ability and willingness to abide by the company's code of conduct, policies and procedures.

  • Strong knowledge, understanding and sensitivity to the Inupiat culture.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task to meet assigned deadlines. 

  • Sound administrative skills, well-developed management skills-principles and people.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 

  • Eight (8) years' related experience with increasing responsibilities. 

  • Knowledgeable of maintenance and rental equipment business, with the ability to develop and oversee KPIs.

  • Experience supervising staff for equipment maintenance.

  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products at an intermediate level. 

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. 

  • Ability to obtain and maintain any clearances required for the position, including military installation access.

 

Preferred

  • Experience with private construction projects and/or government contracts.

  • Experience utilizing Vista Equipment Management, or a similar software system.

The work environment is in a busy construction setting.  The noise level in the work environment is usually varies. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and may be required to travel in small and large commercial aircraft.
