Who We Are Looking For:

The Fitness Specialist is under the direct supervision of the Assistant Facilities Director and is responsible for the operation of the Derby Recreation Commission fitness centers.  
Essential Job Functions (listing most important first):
  • Must be available weekends/evenings; may also work other shifts, as needed.
  • Supervises fitness center participants.
  • Is familiar with and able to communicate details of DRC fitness classes and programs.
  • Assists fitness center patrons to properly use equipment. 
  • Ensures that facilities and equipment are properly maintained.
  • Ensures fitness center customers are signed in and tracks attendance.
  • Carry out all duties assigned by the Aquatic/Fitness Facility Director relating to the fitness center. 
  • Carry out all duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Attend all training and workshops assigned by the Aquatic/Fitness Facility Director
  • Starts at $10.50 an hour
  • Should have proper knowledge of cardio and weight training equipment. 
  • Should be energetic and proficient in the promotion of a progressive program.
  • Should maintain certification in CPR, FIRST AID, and AED.
Essential Job Requirements:
  • Must be able to pass an employment screening
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Experience with youth and older adults preferred.
EDUCATION: A high school diploma is preferred, and some knowledge of basic fitness is preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Some relevant experience preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to bend and reach to maintain center equipment and launder items. 
  • Must be able to move and place weights in their proper locations. 
  • Must be able to see well enough to monitor the physical well-being of center patrons. 
  • Should be able to demonstrate equipment for participants and administer Adult CPR.

Part-time DRC positions may be or may become, covered by the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS) based on anticipated scheduling. Covered employees have all rights and responsibilities of KPERS employees including payroll deductions for retirement benefits. Employees in good standing with 2 years of service and KPERS eligibility are eligible for Vacation, Sick Leave, and Holiday pay at specified part-time rates.
