Job Description
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fisheries Geneticist 2 located in Anchorage!
What you will be doing:
This position provides acts as a project leader for the Gene Conservation Laboratory (GCL) for complex genetics and genomics research projects of regional or statewide scope in Alaska. The responsibilities include designing and implementing major genetics research projects to study the genetic structure and mixed-stock analysis of commercially important fish, shellfish, aquatic plants, and other species, utilizing a combination of genetic methods, molecular techniques, and population genetic theory. To start, this position is expected to play a key role in an existing project examining the population structure of kelp species to help inform mariculture policy in the State of Alaska. Additional responsibilities include interpreting and reporting research findings; preparing and submitting grant applications; supervising staff assisting with research programs; and participating in field collections where appropriate. This statewide position requires close collaboration with laboratory staff, project leaders, regional staff, department leadership, and outside agency staff.

The Gene Conservation Laboratory (GCL) is a section of the Division of Commercial Fisheries within the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G). The GCL utilizes genetic principles and tools to support the management of commercially important fish, shellfish, and aquatic plant species in Alaska, based on the sustained yield principle. The GCL is committed to providing high quality and relevant data that directly supports ADF&G's mission, and the lab is respected and recognized nationally and internationally and by the public as a premier laboratory in the use of genetics for management of natural resources. This position is critical for supporting the GCL's mission by developing genetic research programs critical to address management questions across the state.

The working environment you can expect:
This Fisheries Geneticist 2 will be based in Anchorage, Alaska, at the GCL. The GCL is a high-throughput, state-of-the-art genetics lab. This is a dynamic position, and work will be performed at a computer and daily through interactions with a team of GCL staff, ADF&G staff, and outside collaborators. We offer schedule flexibility and telework options. Some travel is expected to coordinate research projects and provide expertise, and field work may be necessary for sample collections.
Who we are looking for:
  • Background in genetic and genomic data generation, processing, and analyses for population genetics/genomics research, parentage/pedigree reconstruction, and NGS methods development.
  • Experience using high-capacity computing systems (e.g., HPC cluster); reproducible workflows (e.g., R/RStudio and Git/GitHub); and NGS variant calling and analysis pipelines (e.g., Stacks, GATK, and SAMtools/BCFtools).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a proven publication record, and experience with grant writing and project management.
  • Strong supervisory skills and ability to coordinate amongst diverse staff to accomplish project goals.
  • Proven ability to coordinate collaboration among a variety of other agencies.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited college in biology with an emphasis in genetics, which includes at least 8 semester hours or 12 quarter hours of graduate level genetics or molecular biology.
OR
Master's degree from an accredited college with any major, which includes at least 24 graduate semester hours or 36 graduate quarter credits of course work bearing course numbers of 400 or higher excluding thesis credit in biology which includes at least 8 semester hours or 12 quarter hours of graduate level genetics or molecular biology course work.
AND
One year of professional work experience equivalent to a Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska, as a full professional shellfish or fish geneticist involved in designing, planning and conducting research, analyzing and problem solving.
Substitution:
A Ph.D. from an accredited college in Genetics or Molecular Biology or, an allied field with an emphasis in Genetics which includes at least 8 semester hours or 12 quarter hours of graduate level genetics or molecular biology course work.
Special Note:
CLARIFICATION OF DEGREE AREAS FOR MEETING MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Merriam-Webster dictionary definitions will be used to determine whether or not the degree major is defined as a branch of biology.
Biology is defined as the science that deals with the origin, history, physical characteristics, life processes, habits, etc., of plants and animals.
Biometrics, Botany, Microbiology and Zoology are all defined as branches of biology.
Ecology is defined as a branch of biology; however, for the purposes of this job series, the degree focus must be on plants and/or animals versus human groups.
Entomology, Ichthyology and Herpetology are all defined as branches of zoology.
Limnology is defined as the science that deals with the physical, chemical and biological properties and features of fresh waters, especially lakes and ponds.
Some examples of course work emphasizing genetics or molecular technology are:
1. Fisheries (or fish) genetics, Genetics of marine organisms
2. Conservation genetics, Evolutionary genetics
3. Molecular biology, Molecular ecology
