Job Description
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fisheries Geneticist 1 located in Anchorage!
What you will be doing:
As an entry-level geneticist, this position will work as part of a team on genetic research projects in the Southeast region of Alaska. This position will primarily act as a project leader for sockeye salmon genetic mixed stock analysis projects important for fisheries management domestically and under the Pacific Salmon Treaty where such investigations further the goal of sustainable management. Additionally, this position will utilize and help managers interpret genetic information from projects using genetic mark-recapture, genetic individual assignment, and genetic parentage analysis. This position requires close collaboration with laboratory staff, other geneticists/project leaders, regional staff in Southeast Alaska, and outside agency staff.
Our organization, mission and culture:
The Gene Conservation Laboratory (GCL) is a section of the Division of Commercial Fisheries within the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G). The GCL utilizes genetic principles and tools to support the management of commercially important fish, shellfish, and aquatic plant species in Alaska, based on the sustained yield principle. The GCL is committed to providing high quality and relevant data that directly supports ADF&G's mission, and the lab is respected and recognized nationally and internationally and by the public as a premier laboratory in the use of genetics for management of natural resources. This position is critical for supporting the GCL's mission by providing genetic stock composition information from commercial fisheries important for domestic and international management under the Pacific Salmon Treaty.
The Alaska Department of Fish & Game strives for a diverse and inclusive workforce where safety and wellbeing are paramount and employees at all levels promote a culture where everyone is valued, treated equitably, and treated respectfully.
The benefits of joining our team:
The team at the Gene Conservation Laboratory is a close-knit group of geneticists, biologists, and technicians that take pride in providing quality genetic data and advice to policy makers and the public to best manage Alaska's fisheries resources. We value teamwork, collaboration, communication, flexibility, and creativity. For information about the Gene Conservation Laboratory, please visit:
The working environment you can expect:
This permanent, full-time position will be based in Anchorage, Alaska at the GCL, with the option of hybrid telework following the probationary period. The work will be performed primarily in an office setting at a computer (project management, analysis, reporting, etc.) with minimal time spent directly in the laboratory. Some travel is required to coordinate projects, present results, provide expertise in the Pacific Salmon Treaty meetings, and field work/port sampling may be necessary for sample collections.
Who we are looking for:
  • Background in genetic and/or genomic data analysis, including population genetics, genetic mixed stock analysis (i.e., genetic stock identification), and parentage/pedigree analysis.
  • Basic understanding of salmon life history and fisheries management.
  • Experience using reproducible workflows, specifically R, RStudio, Git, and GitHub.
  • Strong verbal and written scientific communication skills with a proven publication record and experience with grant writing.
  • Experience in project management and proven ability to coordinate collaboration among a variety of other scientists.

Hybrid, distance-based options (Teams, Zoom, etc.) are often available, but in-person attendance is preferred as these meetings provide an opportunity to get to know regional management and research staff based in Southeast Alaska.
