Special Information:

This position provides expertise and support to both regional fisheries management and Hungry Horse Dam mitigation projects. The position is largely field-based, and the successful applicant will serve as the primary field technician to the Flathead East Management Biologist. The geographical management area is the Swan River drainage, and the South and Middle Forks of the Flathead River. However, the technician will work collaboratively with the rest of the Kalispell staff to complete work in other nearby water bodies. This work is often in hazardous conditions, and will involve work in lakes, rivers, and small streams. Much of the management area is located within the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, and many times requires the use of horses and mules. Previous experience with stock animals is desirable, as these types of activities can be dangerous to inexperienced personnel. The position will require lifting/carrying heavy objects in uneven terrain, and many times in slippery conditions. These challenges make safety paramount to accomplishing work goals and objectives.

This is a permanent, full-time position that will require occasional long days in the field. Additionally, much of the management area is located in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, and extended trips will require the technician to spend 7-10 days at a time in remote settings. Backcountry work will involve either backpacking or the use of stock animals, and nights spent in the field will require the technician to sleep in tents or backcountry cabins.

This position is located at the R-1 headquarters in Kalispell, Montana. Situated in northwest Montana, Kalispell is a large Montana town and has many amenities that make it an attractive place to work and play. Outdoor recreation in the area is fantastic, with many lakes and streams for water-based sports and miles of trails for hiking, biking, and skiing.

Job Duties:

This could include coordinating extensive trips to remote settings or Wilderness areas, organizing personnel, camping gear, shuttles, food, backpacking equipment, sampling gear and sampling techniques for groups of 2-10 people.
  • Conduct fish population surveys/inventories and laboratory studies to assess the characteristics of fish populations and angler use using appropriate fisheries sampling and survey methods, and operating complex equipment.
  • Inventories, protects, maintains, and enhances aquatic habitat required by fish and aquatic organisms using knowledge of surveying, water quality, and invertebrate sampling equipment and a wide range of habitat improvement techniques.
  • Files, enters, summarizes, analyzes, and interprets fisheries data for management decisions, monitoring, and report writing requiring experience with analytical techniques and computer technology.
  • Communicate with the public, other government agencies, and groups or individuals to convey findings of biological investigations, provide information on FWP programs and opportunities, defend fishery management decisions, and solicit input on management activities.
  • Authorize or supervise the design, assembly, purchase, operation, maintenance and repair of equipment necessary for fisheries investigations and shop/office operation by using mechanical, electrical, welding fabrication, carpentry and organizational techniques.
  • Perform administrative duties to implement regional fisheries program by applying supervisory, clerical and data management techniques.

Minimum Requirements:

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in fish biology, fish and wildlife management, ecology, biology, and three years of progressive job-related experience or work closely related to fish and wildlife biology.
