Firewatch Firefighter - Rural Metro Fire

IMMEDIATELY HIRING in Woodruff, South Carolina

This is for the Woodruff Area. No relocation funds are available. Local candidates only. 

Position Summary:

The Firewatch position is responsible for ensuring the safety of client and contractor employees who are responsible for performing maintenance activities in refinery and industrial plant settings. This includes:

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Controlling and accurately documenting worker access confined spaces to ensure adherence to safe work practices
  • Observing / monitoring the activities of work crews to ensure that safety precautions are in place during hot work (welding, grinding, etc.) to control the risk of fire
  • Monitoring and testing breathing air equipment to ensure that those performing work in a confined space or hazardous work area have an ample supply of air, avoiding exposure to hazardous gases and materials
  • Taking readings from gas monitors to assess air quality in work areas and reduce the risk of employees being exposed to environments considered “immediately dangerous to life and health” and documenting results
  • Supporting the distribution of breathing air and gas detection equipment
  • Monitoring other activities including blinding, blanking, valve removal, piping, etc. to ensure that safe work practices are in place
  • Watch out for fire hazards in the workplace while work is performed by other employees
  • Maintain the conditions and requirements stated on the safety permit
  • Keep flammable materials from ignition sources
  • In the event of fire, extinguish it immediately or turn a fire alarm on
  • Call 911 of the emergency alarm number, and or notify plant service
  • Stop operations if you find any hazardous condition
  • Make sure you and other employees are aware of the exact location of firefighting equipment in the immediate area
  • Maintain constant means of communication
  • As much as possible, keep visual and voice contact with other employees
  • Before and during each shift, inspect the entire work area and look for potential release of flammable vapors or liquids
  • Be prepared to operate fire extinguishers, hydrants, fixed monitors, and hose carts anytime
  • Never leave the job site while the work is being done. If you have to leave, stop the job, and notify workers that you are “standing-by-for”.
  • When all operations are done, do not leave the worksite unless you are sure that there are no hot sparks, burning embers and other fire hazards. Return all firefighting equipment to their original location
  • Maintains grounds, facilities, equipment, and supplies in a clean, orderly, and usable condition.
  • Performs routine non-firefighting work tasks as assigned.
  • Functions well as a team member at any emergency or non-emergency and is willingly to accept their share of the work responsibilities
  • Projects a positive image to our customers and to the public as a fire service professional. 
  • Abides by the Company’s rules, regulations, policies, procedures, mission, guiding principles of GMR.

Education and Experience:

  • Valid Driver’s License. 
  • Must possess a state issued, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (ProBoard) certifications as a minimum:
    • Firefighter I
    • Hazardous Materials-Operations.
  • Must possess a state issued or National Registered EMT-B.
  • Must possess a current CPR/AED certification.
  • Completion of NIMS ICS-100, 200, 700, and 800 at time of hire.

  • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret complex documents. Ability to solve problems involving several options in situations. Requires advanced analytical and quantitative skills.
  • COMPUTER SKILLS: Advanced computer software application (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) and Internet navigational skills. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell.
  • The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • This is a TEMPORARY, 12-18 months, full-time position.

Work Environment:

  • Works inside and outside, exposed to adverse weather conditions; exposed to fire and chemicals, intense heat, toxic gases and dense smoke, extreme heights and confined spaces; subject to recall; subject to mandatory overtime; working shifts and hours may vary due to mission objectives and budgetary constraints.
