Job description

The City of Clayton is accepting applications for the Firefighter/Paramedic position. The purpose of the Firefighter/Paramedic position is to respond to fire alarms, medical and all other emergency calls, save and protect life and property; combat, extinguish and prevent fires and treat people in need of medical assistance.
The Department serves a densely populated urban area. The department responds to over 5,500 response annually and provides services from one fire station with full Fire, EMS (ALS), Fire Prevention and Special Operations Teams. Clayton has been a leader in developing high-rise fire safety and building codes and maintains a rating from the Insurance Service Organization ISO of 2. This rating places our department in the top ten percent (10%) of all departments in the country.
We offer a competitive starting at $71,774.00.
We prefer candidates who have a paramedic license and are graduates from the St. Louis County Fire Academy.
We will also consider candidates without St. Louis County professional firefighter certification with the starting salary of $65,436.00 and the expectation to successfully graduate from the St. Louis County Fire Academy within six (6) months of hire.
We will also consider candidates who are currently in paramedic school.

Minimum Qualifications of the Firefighter/Paramedic:
  • Must be 21 year or older prior to start date.
  • Must be a US citizen or equivalent.
  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state of residence driver's license.
  • Must possess a valid (CPAT) certificate prior to Conditional Offer of Employment.
  • Must be certified by St. Louis County Fire Standards Commission as meeting the requirements of Firefighter (NFPA 1001).
  • Must be able to pass medical exam, the Department's physical agility test, and psychological examination (NFPA 1582).
  • Must possess and maintain, as a condition of continued employment, a valid Missouri EMT-P license or its accepted equivalency.
  • Must maintain an appropriate level of mental and physical fitness to safely perform all assigned functions.

Candidates who fail to submit the copies of required documents by the application deadline may be disqualified from advancing in the selection process.
For those selected to advance, the tentative schedule for the selection process is as follows:
Testing - No later than, February 10, 2024: Written testing must be completed no later than February 10, 2024. The City has recently partnered with the National Testing Network for written testing of qualified applicants by invitation only. Human Resources will review applications as they are received and contact candidates to confirm details and/or request missing application materials. Following HR's review of application materials, qualified candidates will receive invitation to test via email. Candidates are strongly encouraged to submit their application and copies of supporting documents early so as to ensure they have greater availability for testing dates.
