Position Summary

Summary of Position
The Firefighter position is responsible for protecting life and property by performing firefighting, emergency medical aid, rescue, and hazardous environment elimination duties. It also administers fire protection through public education and inspection and maintains fire equipment and protective clothing.

Essential Duties

Essential Duties & Responsibilities


  • Performs firefighting activities including, driving fire apparatus, operating pumps, laying hose, and performing fire suppression techniques.
  • Gives emergency medical aid and assistance as required.
  • Performs rescue operations, high level rescue, extrication, and search.
  • Participates in building inspections and public fire prevention education.
  • Protects the public from hazardous materials, power utilities, etc.
  • Attends and participates in fire drills and meetings.
  • Attends classes on firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects as required.
  • Receives and relays fire calls and alarms. Operates two-way radios.
  • Maintains fire apparatus and equipment. Performs minor repairs to apparatus and equipment. Hangs, dries, and tests hoses.
  • Assists in developing plans for emergency preparedness, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and fire prevention.
  • Presents programs to the public on safety, medical, and fire prevention issues.
  • Performs salvage operations such as covers, water damage prevention, removing debris, etc.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications


  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Be a Rosemount resident or live within a five-mile driving distance of a Rosemount fire station.
  • Possess (or be able to obtain by time of hire) a valid Class D Minnesota Driver’s License.
  • Be able to complete the physical agility test requirements of the position and pass a firefighter medical examination.
  • Be able to read and write in English.
  • Be of good moral character.
  • Have no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.

Additional Requirements
  • Must complete a two-year probationary period
  • Must respond to a minimum number of fire calls, training drills, meetings, and special events.

Leadership Requirements
May assist to coordinate, instruct, or supervise work of other firefighters. Able to take command at fires, medicals, or rescues when no other senior firefighters are present.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a firefighter to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the firefighter is frequently required to do the following: stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; sit; climb; balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; crawl; talk; hear; taste; smell; see; feel. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 125 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, the ability to adjust focus, and night vision. Facial features to allow wearing and sealing of the self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) mask.
Tools & Equipment
Emergency medical aid equipment, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses, ladders, hand tools, radios, pager, personal computer, fans, phone, power tools.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of driver safety.
  • Ability to learn the operation of fire suppression and other emergency equipment.
  • Ability to learn and apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques.
  • Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training, or maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme height, intense heat, cold, smoke, or confined areas.
  • Ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with other employees, agencies, and the public.

Work Hours & Location
On call 24 hours a day, 365 days per year in the city of Rosemount and surrounding mutual aid communities.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.
The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high precarious places.
Employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic, acidic, or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
Employee may be exposed to blood, vomit, and other body fluids occasionally during performance of duties.
Occasionally, noise level may be loud, about 85 dB(a).
