Job Summary
Under the direction of the Training Coordinator and/or designated lead instructor(s), the Support position contributes to the student's hands-on experience in a controlled environment. Support personnel contribute to course objectives through their interactions in the Fire and EMS curriculums facilitating student learning.
Person(s) in this position may encounter sensitive information in performing their duties and are expected to maintain that information with complete confidentiality.

Job Functions
Essential Functions
  • Supervise and assist in skills instruction for students within the Fire and EMS curriculums.
  • Maintains regular communication and coordination with the course instructor(s).
  • Assists in fire service-related skill evolutions and/or scenarios.
  • Completes other paperwork as requested by the instructor, which may include but is not limited to time sheets, program evaluations, and student evaluations.
  • Remains informed of new technologies in Fire and EMS disciplines.
  • May be asked to provide regular reports of student progress to the instructors in the classroom or lab environment.
  • Monitors classroom and field-related safety protocols.
  • Assists in maintaining program equipment and facilities as needed.
  • Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned.
  • Delivers and operates apparatus, hand tools, and EMS equipment to meet course objectives.

Non-Essential Functions
  • Performs related duties as directed.

Qualifications
Skills, Abilities & Other Requirements
  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license.
  • Must maintain all required certifications and licenses.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools.
  • Must be able to speak and/or signal students to convey or exchange information.
  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment background screening.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalence to a high school diploma. Experience in Fire/Emergency Medical Services training and education. Candidates must possess the appropriate local, state, or national certifications for the course they have been assigned to support.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
Minimum three years directly related experience to the program of instruction or support.
  • Support Role candidates must provide certificates in the following areas they apply to support:
  • VDFP Firefighter 1, 2, HazMat Ops, VDFP Driver Operator-Pumper, VDFP Driver/Operator-Aerial.
  • Certified EMS Education Coordinator will provide pre-hospital education curriculums.

Working Conditions & Disclaimer
Working Conditions
Duties are normally performed in a classroom setting. However, there are some training objectives that will expose the Support role to adverse environmental conditions.
Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools, such as an ambulance, boat, trailer, dive equipment, defibrillator, suction unit, oxygen delivery system, immobilization equipment, pulse oximeter, fire apparatus, pump, ladder, aerial platform, generator, air compressor, hose, hydrant, extinguisher, self-contained breathing apparatus, extrication tools, specialized rescue equipment, hydraulic tools, chain saw, power tools, hand tools, gas detector, smoke ejector, ventilation fan, radiation monitor, meters, medical/first aid supplies, radio communications equipment, or general office equipment. Tasks require the ability to lift, carry or push items more than 100 pounds and may involve a combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling.
