Job description

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Engineering Services is seeking a Fire Safety Supervisor to assist as the operational supervisor of Fire Safety staff. Manage the planning, programming, and schedules of Fire Safety staff and systems. Coordinate the activities of skilled trade employees and other workers engaged in many Fire Safety roles. Oversee the equipment, inspections, testing, and maintenance of Fire Safety assets and systems. Ensure optimized performance of all Fire Safety systems installed in UIHC properties and other locations as needed.
Job Duties:

  • Assist with maintaining inventory, labor costs, and operational budget that is in alignment with set department budget while ensuring that strategic goals can be met.
  • Determine priority needs to schedule and assign the work of professional, technical support, and/or trade staff providing engineering, installation, and operations for Fire Safety systems. Ensure all work is documented on necessary compliance logs and reports.
  • Ensure and maintain compliance of staff with a focus on safety processes and procedures. Lead staff in meeting compliances with all applicable safety regulations and safety requirements. Promote safety improvements in the workplace. Oversee all compliance work and manage documents to generate reports to State Fire Marshal Office, the University of Iowa's Insurance Carrier and the Joint Commission.
  • Assist with inspection teams and or surveys to determine deficiencies. Review recommendations for upgrades or deficiency repairs. Work collaboratively with Safety & Security's Compliance Specialist to determine corrective actions.
  • Independently manage systematic operations and maintenance practices for monitoring, investigating, analyzing, and optimizing the performance of building life safety systems, ensuring peak performance over the life of a facility.
  • Participate in the preparation of studies, estimates, reports, plans, designs, tests, and inspections of Fire Safety systems and equipment.
  • Work collaboratively with the Compliance Specialist in the planning, designing, construction, operation, and improvement of complex fire and life safety electrical and protection systems within the building operations, as well as their interconnection to other complex systems.
  • Provide oversight of staff to determine training and coaching opportunities to ensure that staff can accurately complete and accomplish tasks and department goals. Assist with hiring and training staff to align with strategic goals and further their professional development. Review and recommend staff classification changes as needed and as skill sets of individuals warrant review.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with vendors, contractors, and others in the fire alarm and fire protection industry while reviewing service contracts, work being completed, and project documentation to determine alignment with state-adopted codes and budgetary concerns.
  • Determine appropriate staffing levels and structures to complete required compliance in inspections, testing, and maintenance programs as well as required deficiency repairs for fire alarm, fire protection, and special hazards systems.
  • Observe and inspect work in progress and at completion to ensure that specific standards, fire and building codes, as well as all regulations are followed.
  • Verify and conduct periodic inspections of UIHC buildings and building systems and provide reports to appropriate leadership. May inspect work performed by outside contractors to ensure conformance with project specifications.
  • Respond to emergency issues and determine corrective measures to fix the immediate issue, while also focusing on long-standing improvements to reduce emergency impairments. Manage and maintain the emergency response team of first responders to fire alarm systems, including after-hours responses.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required
  • 1 year of experience in fire alarm system installation, maintenance, inspection, repair, testing, and commissioning
  • The ability to read and interpret building plans, diagrams, architectural blueprints and specifications
  • Working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the mechanical, electrical, and building trades
  • Experience in a supervisory or leadership role
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet the University of Iowa Fleet Safety Standards

Desirable Qualifications
  • Ability to plan and estimate fire alarm system installation in accordance with International Building Code (IBC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 72, National Electrical Code, and all applicable local and state codes
  • Experience implementing process improvements in the workplace
  • NICET II certification in Fire Protection Field (Alarm, Water, Special Hazard)
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrated ability to develop system specifications
