Duties
  • As a Fire Protection Inspector, you are responsible for the following duties:
  • Conduct an information program and secures client involvement in fire prevention, detection, and suppression
  • Adapt standard Fire Protection practices, procedures, and techniques to local requirements and for application to potential hazards in highly specialized and technical operations
  • Conduct periodic and special inspections of principal high to low hazard buildings on post; such as airfield facilities, treatment plants, shop facilities, computer facilities, schools, fuel storage and dispensing facilities
  • Develop material and provides situational and classroom training in installation fire prevention activities
  • Provide coordination on the placement of new, and modifications to, emergency lighting systems
  • Develop/write fire prevention articles from actual fire incidents for the installation

Requirements
Conditions of Employment
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Secret Security clearance.
  • Individual must possess and maintain a government motor vehicle license, and valid state driver's license.
  • This position requires 120 hours of work per two (2) week pay period, with one (2) 24 hour work per pay period. However, under certain circumstances, a 40 hour workweek may be warranted, which eliminates the 24 hour shift each week.
  • May be required to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • The wearing of a uniform is required.
  • This is a Mission Essential position; Position is subject to recall to assist at incident command post, deploying emergency response trailers or staffing the EOC during major disasters or incidents.
  • Drug test is required.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to undergo a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoDi 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • Position requires that you must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
  • Position requires that you must participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Position requires the incumbent to travel 5% of the time for temporary duty for training.
  • Position requires that you obtain and maintain CPR and basic first aid certification.

In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To Qualify for the GS 8 Level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards and developing, implementing, or providing training in Fire Protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
IN ADDITION TO SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE THE POSITION REQUIRES THE INCUMBENT TO POSSESS THE FOLLOWING CERTIFICATIONS : Fire Officer I, Fire Inspector I and II, Fire Instructor I, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Hazardous Materials Awareness Certifications. These certifications must have been awarded by the DOD or any equivalent entity accredited by IFSAC or Pro-Board.NOTE: Fire Instructor II and First Responder are not required for initial hire. Upon employment date, the employee is required to successfully complete the certification requirements within one year (365 days). Failure to successfully complete the certification is a condition of employment and will result in termination of employment. NOTE YOU MUST ATTACH A COPY OF ALL THE REQUIRED CERTIFICATES TO YOUR APPLICATION PACKAGE (Refer to the Required Documents Section).
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
*Note: All applicants must meet specialized experience and time in grade requirements within thirty (30) days after the closing date of the announcement. Current employees applying under VEOA are subject to time-in-grade restrictions like any other GS employee.
IMPORTANT SPECIAL RETIREMENT COVERAGE(SRC) INFORMATION:
This position has been identified by Department of Army and approved by the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness as a secondary position for special retirement coverage as identified in 5 CFR 831 Subpart I for CSRS Retirement coverage and 5 CFR 842 Subpart H for FERS retirement coverage.
Coverage under Special Retirement Coverage is NOT automatic. However, an employee may bring their existing special retirement coverage with them if they meet the transfer requirements below.CSRS - Per CSRS and FERS Handbook, Subchapter 46A, Section 46A3.2-1C - The employee, while covered under the special provision, moves directly (that is, without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position; and if applicable, the employee has been continuously employed in a secondary position or positions since moving from a rigorous position without a break in service exceeding 3 days.
FERS - Per CSRS and FERS Handbook, Subchapter 46B, Section 463.2-1C
1. The employee, while covered under the special provision, moves directly (that is, without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a rigorous position to a secondary position;
2. The employee has completed 3 years of service in a rigorous position, including any such service during which no FERS deductions were withheld; and
3. If applicable, the employee has been continuously employed in a secondary position or positions since moving from a rigorous position without a break in service exceeding 3 days.
NOTES:
1. Service as a temporary or intermittent employee may be counted toward the 3-year requirement if it is otherwise qualifying. (While under an intermittent tour of duty, only actual days worked are counted.) For purposes of applying the 3-year requirement, it does not matter whether the service is actually made creditable by payment of a deposit or whether the service cannot be made creditable. Thus, even post-1998 non-deduction service (which can never be creditable under FERS for the purpose of qualifying for or computing a benefit can be used to meet the 3-year requirement. Also, Federal service under another retirement system for Government employees may be used to meet the 3-year requirement if it is otherwise qualifying.
2. A break in employment in secondary positions that begins with an involuntary separation (not for cause) within the meaning of 5 U.S.C. 8414(b)(21)(A) is continuous for this purpose.In addition to providing the required eligibility documentation listed elsewhere in this job announcement, if you believe you are eligible for Special Retirement Coverage under a secondary position, you must provide sufficient documentation (SF-50s) as indicated above for verification.
Education
