Form of workPosition Summary The Fire Protection Engineer designs and creates systems, products, and procedures that prevent, control, and mitigate the effects of fires. This role provides technical expertise within the department.
Responsibilities
• Select engineering techniques to solve problems and make design recommendations with little supervision
• Execute research, design, and development projects in accordance with project specifications.
• Model parts using Solidworks; create assemblies, part drawings, inspection criteria, and other drawings as necessary
• Interface with outside vendors to select and specify components
• Perform Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) using Solidworks Simulation
• Design and perform in-house testing to validate designs
• Coordinate with third-party test labs to validate designs
• Create engineering judgments for customers to solve field problems
• Create ECOs, part specifications, and other documents necessary to implement new products and design changes
• Provide technical support for products use and/or application inquiries.
• Provide recommendations and/or custom solutions for job-specific applications • Perform other duties as needed
Knowledge & Skills
• Knowledge of fire safety, including understanding of different types of fire-resistant materials, how to create fire-safe environments, and how to design fire-safe products.
• Strong understanding of building and fire codes
• Familiarity with NFPA, UL, and ASTM standards
• Proficient in computer-aided design (CAD) software
• Ability to perform basic programming and parametric modeling
• Knowledge of dimensioning and tolerancing analysis.
• Ability to read and interpret prints and product specifications
• Ability to identify complex problems, evaluate options, and implement solutions
• Ability to work independently or collaboratively with a team
• Ability to leverage resources and/or engage others to meet project deadlines and budget
• Ability to communicate effectively with internal/external customers verbally and in writing
Experience
• 5 or more years of experience as an Engineer, fire-Protection Engineering preferred
• Fire protection design experience
• Experience using MS Office Suite and Solidworks, AutoCAD, or similar modeling software in a professional environment
Education
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering- Fire Protection, Mechanical, Chemical, or similar
Other Requirements
• Physical- This position operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
• Travel – approximately 10%
