Position Information
This position is located in Cobb County Fire Department.
Essential Functions
Reviews and approves building construction plans: evaluates construction alternatives for equivalency to required building and fire codes and national Fire Protection safety standards; evaluates fire alarm, fire separation, fire detection systems, smoke evacuation systems, fire sprinkler systems, adequate water supply, fire department access and connection to the fire sprinkler systems; and reviews and approves other fire safety features.
Reviews Fire Protection requirements for special hazards such as high-piled storage, flammable liquid storage and handling, hazardous materials storage and handling, and other special fire and life safety hazards.
Coordinates the work of engineering consultants and contractors with focus on structural, mechanical, and electrical areas.
Ensures conformance to approved building plans and specifications: inspects new and existing buildings for special fire and life safety concerns; and witnesses and approves on-site testing of Fire Protection equipment and systems.
Provides advice, interpretation, and consultation to owners, contractors, designers, architects, and engineers on fire safety code requirements, construction methods, new products, standards, and technology: and provides safety consulting to the general public.
Provides technical interpretation of fire safety codes and standards, training, and research to the fire prevention inspection staff: and assists in the training of department personnel and other interested parties where appropriate.
Maintains professional knowledge and skills by attending seminars, conferences and training sessions: researches and studies new types of fire equipment, technologies and standards.
Confers with upper management to keep them informed on projects and issues: makes recommendations for improvements; and prepares reports and maintains records as dictated by applicable policies, procedures, laws and ordinances.
Represents the department to developers, property managers, property owners, tenants, contractors, architects, and engineers, in committees, and at plan review meetings.
Fills in as acting manager (captain) as needed: assigns and directs work; appraises performance; rewards and disciplines employees; and ensures compliance and maintaining of standards.
Represents the fire department in an educational/advisory role reviewing safety plans for special events with large assemblies and meeting with event coordinators.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Protection Technology, or related field required; experience in plans review, code compliance or code enforcement preferred; or any equivalent of combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job.
Licenses and Certifications
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Physical Abilities
Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
Sensory Requirements
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate depth and the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors
Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
