The Rancho Cucamonga Fire Protection District provides vital fire and life safety services to residents, visitors and businesses in Rancho Cucamonga. Through an innovative combination of risk reduction and emergency response programs, Fire District personnel are dedicated to delivering these services in an effective, efficient and professional manner to those we serve in cadence with the District's Mission and Core Values.

They might have knowledge of business safety; construction methods; and fire, life safety, and construction codes. They will understand methods of preparing written communications for businesses of all sizes and types, community groups, and counterparts in City departments. They might have experience with public relations, and community affairs, awareness and outreach. They might have experience with construction or contractor work, and/or planning and community development work. The ideal candidate will be able to determine, understand, and solve problems; communicate effectively across all age groups and professions; demonstrate personal and professional skills in public and customer service; and will be able to interact with people in a respectful, cooperative, and caring manner.
You will be responsible for:
  • Being a contributing member of the Prevention and Risk Reduction team.
  • Working with businesses to identify vulnerabilities and gaps in operational safety that put the business at undue risk of damage.
  • Learning, understanding, and productively applying fire and life safety codes in the interest of protecting people, businesses, the economy, and the environment.
  • Working collaboratively with the Prevention team, Building Inspectors, and Community Improvement Officers.
  • Inspecting buildings, regulated business operations, fire protection and life safety systems, places of assembly, and schools to verify compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Assisting with community events and engaging with residents and businesses on topics such as safety in the home and at work, prevention of fires and injuries, emergency and disaster preparedness, and personal and community resiliency.

Salary Range for Fire Prevention Specialist InspectionI/II
Fire Prevention Specialist Inspection I: $4,708.02 - $6,008.76 per month
Fire Prevention Specialist Inspection II: $5,190.28 - $6,624.26 per month

Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for a Fire Prevention SpecialistI/II. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is the equivalent of:
Fire Prevention Specialist I
Graduation from high school or equivalent and three years of experience involving public contact, customer service; public relations; community affairs, awareness, or outreach work; construction or contractor work; or planning and community development work. One year of experience involving fire, life, and/or environmental safety is preferred. Any other related work or combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Fire Prevention Specialist II
In addition to the education and/or experience of a Fire Prevention Specialist I, one to two years of experience and specialized training in the enforcement of fire and life safety codes and standards and a demonstrated ability to work independently.
Minimum four years of public contact experience such as, but not limited to, Building/Fire Inspection, Community Improvement / Code Enforcement, Community Services, Development Services, Public Relations, Community Affairs, or Construction/Contract/Skilled Trade project sales/supervision/ management.
Minimum three years as Fire Prevention Specialist I or equivalent full-time work with a Fire Prevention bureau or division primarily doing construction and/or code compliance inspections.
Experience with a public agency is highly desired. The Fire Prevention Specialist II will have all of the certifications, training, and specialized experience listed herein.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles, systems, procedures, and methods of fire protection and prevention, business and community safety, construction methods, and/or environmental preservation; fire, life safety, and construction codes and regulations; methods of preparing written communications for target groups such as businesses of all sizes and types, community groups, and counterparts in City departments. Ability to interpret codes and regulations and explain the codes and regulations to the public; read building plans and maps and follow directions; work cooperatively with other employees and the public; maintain records and prepare reports, and communicate effectively across all age groups and professions. Personal and professional skills in public and customer service; determining, understanding, and solving problems; and interacting with people in a respectful, cooperative, and caring manner.
Special Requirements:
Fire Prevention Specialist I
Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
California State Fire Marshal Inspector I certification within one year of hire.
California State Fire Marshal Statutes and Regulations course completed within one year of hire.
PC 832 certification (arrest, search, and seizure only; firearms is not required) within one year of hire.
Fire Prevention Specialist II
Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
Current International Code Council (ICC) Inspector II certification.
California State Fire Marshal Inspector II certification.
Public Display of Aerial Fireworks training completed.
Hazmat First Responder Awareness training completed.
ICS-100 and ICS-200 courses completed.
Plans Examiner 1A and 1B completed.
Fire and Life Safety Educator 1 or National Fire Academy CRR for Company Officers completed.
Cannot currently be in a Personal Improvement Program based on an evaluation of Does Not Meet Expectations.
A person working in the Fire Prevention Specialist I classification can be assigned to the Fire Prevention Specialist II classification upon meeting all of the certification, training, and experience requirements of the Fire Prevention II classification.APPLICATION PROCESS: All applicants are required to apply online at www.cityofrc.us.Closing date is at 5:00pm on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 or until a sufficient number of qualified applications have been received.
