GENERAL SUMMARY
The firefighter/EMT performs a wide variety of technical tasks and functions in support of fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue, and hazardous materials operations; fire prevention and life safety public education programs; and other operations and related activities in support of Department mission and objectives. Duties may vary according to job assignment and skill level.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/EXAMPLES OF JOB DUTIES
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Perform assigned duties within scope of authority and training, according to department operating practices and expectations
- Maintain a state of readiness for immediate emergency response; inspect, maintain, repair, and perform other technical tasks related to apparatus and equipment; perform pre-fire planning; and testing of fire hydrants and fire hoses
- Participate in cleaning and maintaining station facilities, living quarters, grounds, equipment, and apparatus; ensure that appropriate conditions are maintained
- Participate in classes, drills, and training to maintain and upgrade physical fitness, firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical skills; and knowledge of service area characteristics and target hazards
- Respond to emergency calls related to fire suppression operations, search and rescue, and emergency medical services; provide appropriate services as required; prepare reports and work logs as assigned; and follow orders under stressful conditions
- Perform all duties related to fire rescue, including connecting and carrying fire hose, carrying, setting up, and climbing ladders, directing water and chemicals on burning structures, vegetation, vehicle, and other objects; and searching for trapped or injured people
- Perform emergency medical duties as an Emergency Medical Technician under medical direction; stabilize acutely ill or injured persons; complete patient reports and other documentation as required
- Participate in a variety of public education and fire prevention programs, including risk reduction activities, station tours, residential fire safety inspections, and demonstration of fire equipment and apparatus
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AT TIME OF APPLICATION
- Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the U.S.
- Possess valid Texas Class C Driver's License (Class B required within 180 days of employment)
- Possess current TCFP Basic Structure Firefighter certification or higher
- Possess current Texas DSHS Emergency Medical Technician – Basic certification or higher
- Possess AHA BLS Provider certification
- Completion of Courage to Be Safe and Highway Traffic Incident Management classes
RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS
- TFCP Driver/Operator-Pumper certification
- NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800
- 2-year degree or 60 college credit hours
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS
Strenuous and/or heavy exertion factors are required to perform this job. Along with the requirements of adequate speech, hearing, and eyesight, essential duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for adequate physical performance, including the ability to:
- Have regular attendance
- Bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, climb
- Run, walk, stand, or sit for prolonged periods of time
- Carry, push, pull, drag, hold, and lift moderate to heavy objects
- Operate assigned apparatus, motorized equipment, and hand tools
- Maintain the mental capacity to make sound judgments regarding work
