General Description
The Class 1 ISO-rated Green Bay Metro Fire Department is utilizing Chippewa Valley Technical College's (CVTC) regional hiring process to establish an eligibility list that will be used to hire new Fire Fighters in the spring of 2024. The department wants to attract and retain individuals who reflect the diversity of the community.

Examples of Duties
Performs work in fire suppression including: connecting, dragging and carrying heavy hose over all types of terrain including up ladders, stairs and through and over debris; maneuvering heavy nozzles and directing fire streams; raising and climbing ladders; carrying and operating all fire suppression related equipment; forcing doors and windows and cutting holes in buildings to facilitate entry or to ventilate; removing persons from danger, performing rescue operations; removing burning items from buildings. While wearing heavy protective clothing and using heavy equipment, works in extreme conditions including heights, superheated, smoke and fire filled buildings, toxic atmospheres, cramped and difficult to enter spaces, areas of low visibility and unknown dangers, fire, flood, explosions, storms, drownings, transportation accidents, hazardous material incidents, building collapse, electrical emergencies, all weather conditions, etc.
Performs emergency medical work as an EMT/Paramedic, including rendering treatment, carrying injured or unconscious patients and handling inebriated and/or mentally unstable persons. Performs salvage and overhaul work including pulling down ceilings and walls. Performs maintenance work in the upkeep of department property including cleaning hoses and hand tools, cleaning fire apparatus, sharpening tools, general inspection of equipment, and fire station cleaning and maintenance. Performs service calls including sealing gas leaks, investigating complaints, lockouts, etc. Performs inspection of public buildings. Conducts tours of department facilities. Participates in ongoing training as directed. Assumes duties of engineer as directed.
Minimum Qualifications Required
  1. High school diploma or equivalent
  2. Associate Degree in Fire Science, Fire Protection Technician, Fire Medic, or other related field.
  3. Current EMT-Basic certification.
  4. Current certification as a Fire Fighter II by the State of Wisconsin or an IFSAC accredited agency.
  5. Valid CPAT Certification.
  6. Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
Candidates must the Associate Degree requirement by December 31, 2023. All other criteria must be met at the time of application in order to be considered.
A combination of equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Good knowledge of principles and practices of fire prevention and suppression, use and maintenance of fire fighting equipment and apparatus, necessary medical procedures. Skill in operating equipment necessary to perform duties of Fire Fighter, dealing with the general public in a courteous manner. Considerable skill in oral and written communication.
Ability to follow both oral and written direction, work long hours in stressful situations requiring strength, flexibility and endurance, work as a team member, establish and maintain effective working relationship with co-workers including the ability to live in a communal setting while on duty, assume duties of engineer, obtain any necessary certification, perform all maintenance and cleaning duties, perform record keeping duties, successfully complete any necessary training.
