Fire Emergency Dispatcher

Fire Emergency Dispatchers are responsible for operating Computer-Aided Dispatching equipment to quickly and accurately receive and transmit information of an emergency nature for Phoenix and surrounding communities. Work involves answering and evaluating incoming 911 calls to determine the appropriate level of fire or emergency medical assistance required, dispatching units, giving medical pre-arrival instructions, and transmitting information and messages according to established procedures. Employees are expected to demonstrate excellent oral communication skills, multi-task efficiently in a fast-paced environment, handle emergency situations sensitively, and exercise considerable judgment under pressure.

Location: 2425 West Lower Buckeye Building 8, Phoenix, AZ, 85009

This is a 24-hour per day, 7-day per week operation.

Pay Range: $26.18 to $38.68 per hour.

Hiring Range: $26.18 to $31.82 per hour.

• One year of experience in public contact and clerical work including experience in general typing.
• Emergency Medical Technician training is desirable.
• Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

• Must be able to do the following:
  • Type a minimum of 40 words per minute. Applicants who successfully complete the written exam will be given a typing test and must pass with a score of 40 words per minute or better to move on to the next step of the recruitment process.
  • Pass the Emergency Medical Dispatch Program and the CPR training course within six months of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
  • Sit or stand while on the telephone and use multiple computer monitors for 8-10 hours per day.
  • Perceive the full range of the color spectrum.
• Vacation and shift assignments are determined by seniority. New hires and employees are required to work all shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays until assigned to a permanent shift.
• Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

• Completion of Emergency Medical Dispatch and Emergency Medical Technician coursework.
• Experience at a call center processing a high volume of incoming calls.
• Experience multi-tasking using the telephone and radio while inputting and accessing data on the computer.
