Job description
Join us as Fire Chief and be part of shaping the vibrant future of Wea Township.
Individual plans, directs and reviews the activities and operations of the Fire Department including fire suppression, prevention, training and administration; to coordinate assigned activities with Wea Fire
Department and Wea Volunteer Fire Association.
Reports to Wea Township Trustee.
This is a Salaried position expected to work Monday – Friday Business hours and as needed for handling all aspects of the Fire Chief position. Approx 50-55 hours a week
Responsibilities
Directs Fire personnel and operations that include fire suppression, prevention, training and administration.
Participates in labor relations. Develops and administers standard operating policies and procedures.
Responds to major fire alarms.
Directs fire suppression activities as necessary.
Oversees the development and implementation of fire related codes and ordinances.
Maintains knowledge of trends and innovations in the field of fire prevention, suppression, and operations.
Difficulty of Work
Office and emergency firefighting environment; work with water; travel from site to site; work closely with others. Essential and marginal functions require maintaining physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties.
Personal Working Relationships
Maintain frequent contact with Township Trustee, paid departmental personnel, volunteer association department personnel, and members of general public for the purpose of receiving and giving factual information and rendering of services.
Job Requirements
Knowledge and skills equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in fire science, public administration, or a closely related field.
Eight years of experience with at least four years of administrative and supervisory responsibilities in an organized fire department.
Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and uses of modern fire-fighting apparatus and equipment.
Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations. Knowledge of safe work practices and procedures.
Knowledge of operational characteristics, services, and activities of comprehensive fire suppression, prevention, training and administrative programs, and emergency services operations, including high- angle or aerial rescue, confined space rescue, trench and building collapse rescues, and hazardous materials response.
Knowledge of technical and administrative aspects of fire suppression, fire prevention, training and administration.
Ability to use good judgment in stressful and emergency situations.
Ability to safely operate department vehicles, apparatus, other emergency equipment, and specialized emergency communications equipment.
Ability to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception and the physical condition needed to perform the primary responsibilities of the position with or without accommodation.
Ability to effectively work while exposed to possible hazardous chemicals and materials, fumes and smoke, intense heat, electrical hazards, confined or high work places, dangerous animals, extremely loud noises, emergency driving hazards and traffic hazards, and natural and man-made disasters.
