Description
General Description:
The purpose of this class within the organization is to manage a fire station and to protect the lives and property of the citizens of Petersburg. This class works under administrative supervision, developing and implementing programs within organizational policies and reports major activities to executive level administrators through conferences and reports.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
Essential Functions
Essential Functions:
Engages in personnel leadership, management and training.
Completes fire reports for the daily incidents; ensures the Medic Unit completes fire reports.
Oversees and executes budget, supply orders, station maintenance, vendor relations and vehicle operations.
Supervises the management of equipment and facilities.
Ensures life safety for the citizens, visitors and firefighters of the City of Petersburg when responding to emergency and non-emergency calls.
Supervises assigned personnel on all incidents and other activities such as training and public service events as well as daily work assignments.
Responds to emergency and non-emergency incidents.
Ensures the shifts are properly staffed.
Ensures public interactions during emergency and non-emergency incidents.
Ensures firefighter safety on emergency incidents such as fires, hazardous materials incidents, and emergency medical calls.
Ensures the firefighters are properly trained to perform the job functions they are assigned.
This training includes firefighting tactics, pumping and operating a fire apparatus, and emergency medical services training (AED use, CPR, etc.)
Ensures all policies are followed.
Ensures that both pieces of apparatus assigned to this fire station are ready to perform.
Participates and instructs crew training to maintain efficiency and state certification.
Oversees the readiness and maintenance of firefighting and medical apparatus and equipment.
Directs and oversees the cleanliness and maintenance of a fire station.
Enters data for reports and shift payroll.
Educates the public on fire safety.
Additional Duties:
Coordinate activities with other companies as necessary (joint training, building tours etc.).
Submits internal request and reports to other divisions as necessary.
Ensures all equipment and supplies for the apparatus and station are stocked.
Supervises weekly in depth maintenance on apparatus and station.
Schedules and plans daily activities training, maintenance, public events, tours, and demonstrations.
Completes a visual inspection of all of the firefighters personal safety gear to include firefighting gear.
Completes the ordering of stations supplies, EMS supplies, apparatus supplies, and the buying of food and condiments for the station.
Performs related work as assigned.

The impact of errors is moderately serious - affects work unit and may affect other units or citizens or loss of life could occur but probability is likely.
Physical Demands:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
Equipment Usage:
Equipment usage involves responsibility for materials, machines, tools, equipment, work aids, and products.
Handles or uses apparatus, power tools, heavy equipment or work aids involving some latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items.
Unavoidable Hazards:
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
Bright/dim light; dusts and pollen extreme heat and/or cold; wet or humid conditions. extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife vibration; fumes and/or noxious odors traffic; moving machinery electrical shock; heights radiation; disease/pathogens toxic/caustic chemicals; explosives; violence other extreme hazards not listed above: firefighting and Hazmat; exposure to everything from asbestos to zinc.
Safety of Others:
Safety of others refers to the level of responsibility for the safety of others, either inherent in the job or to ensure the safety of the general public.
Requires considerable responsibility for the first-line supervision of the provision of continuous enforcement of the laws and standards of public health and safety.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Seven (7) continuous years of current employment as a FF/EMT within the Petersburg Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services or three (3) years as a Fire Sergeant or Assistant Fire Marshal in the Petersburg Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services.
A candidate with seven (7) years of total service is eligible for Fire Captain (example: 5 years as FF/EMT plus 2 years as Sgt equals 7 years total service).
A valid Commonwealth of VA driver's license consistent with the City's Administrative Regulation-Employee Driving Records.
No disciplinary action within 12 months of the application closing date (written reprimand, suspension, or demotion).
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Must meet departmental and State certification requirements as may be deemed appropriate.
Must meet and maintain specified requirement to advance within the career development plan.
