Job description

Definition

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for learning to obtain and identify fingerprints; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
  • Learns to identify persons for law enforcement purposes by obtaining and comparing fingerprints, photographs and computer information;
  • Learns to obtain inked ten print and palm cards; learns to scan fingerprints and palm prints into live database;
  • Learns to collect and properly handle DNA specimens in accordance with applicable collection and handling procedures;
  • Learns to verify fingerprints and enter fingerprints into automated database;
  • Learns to reads fingerprint classifications and compare to inked or scanned ten prints;
  • Learns to process prisoners/suspects and register convicted felons;
  • Learns how to testify in court as an expert witness;
  • Learns to file identification information;
  • Learns to operate various computer terminals in order to transmit and retrieve information, create and update files and conduct file searches;
  • Delivers and retrieves documents from other law enforcement agencies for the Division of Police;
  • May communicate with individuals who have limited English language skills;
  • May be required to stand for extended periods of time in order to obtain fingerprints.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of the twelfth school grade. Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of a high school diploma.
Possession of LEADS/BCI certification by the end of probationary period.

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required for some positions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Some knowledge of fingerprints; skill to accurately and efficiently enter data into a computer; ability to use a computer and relevant software; ability to inspect detailed pictures, identifying any distinctions between them; ability to copy numbers and letters accurately; ability to match detailed pictures; ability to read and comprehend memoranda and textbooks; ability to perform addition; ability to communicate verbally to co-workers, making oneself understood; ability to file records according to an alphanumeric system; ability to stand for extended periods of time.

The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create a NEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list, and will replace the names on the current list. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. Questions regarding this process can be directed to the Test Center at 614-645-7439.
The examination process will consist of a computerized exam weighted 100% covering Reading Comprehension, Information Ordering, Fingerprint Comparison, name/number comparison, data entry, and Microsoft 2016/2019 Outlook and Word.
The exam is expected to be administered in June. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.
All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test. For any position within the Division of Police, the hiring process will also include the completion of an extensive personal history questionnaire and a polygraph examination.
