Rise Academy is the East End’s own fully-accredited, private, Christian high school. Rise Academy is part of Rise Richmond, a nonprofit serving students and families in Richmond’s East End. Together with families, neighbors, and community partners, Rise Richmond is creating a world where students can access excellent, equitable learning opportunities. Through Rise After School, Rise Academy, and Rise Labs, we offer supportive spaces where students can rise to new opportunities, pursue goals that once seemed out of reach, and exceed their expectations.

Rise Academy is hiring for a Fine Arts Teacher; ideally, this role will begin in the Spring 2024 semester.  Fine Arts Teacher is a professional position that is part of the Rise Academy team. The incumbent will provide dynamic classroom leadership and instruction, teach a variety of core high school Art courses and electives, and maintain a well-managed classroom. We seek a dynamic Fine Art Teacher with strong content knowledge who teaches in engaging ways. We are looking for candidates who have a background in Music, Visual Arts, and/or Drama. 

Rise Academy is committed to trauma-informed care; we seek instructors who view their students as whole people. This position requires an awareness of the urban student’s context and a resolve to teach in culturally competent ways, and in small classroom settings. Full-time instructors will be asked to teach three sections of a course in their field per semester as well as various assigned duties as needed, with a daily planning period of 80 minutes every school day. The Fine Arts Teacher reports to the School Principal and supervises no staff.

Essential Duties

  • Reports from 8:15 AM - 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday
  • Competently instructs students in Science courses
  • Attends a bi-weekly Rise Academy Staff Meeting, Tuesdays from 3:30 PM – 4:00 PM
  • Prepares original lesson plans that align with Virginia Standards of Learning vis a vis pacing and course content
  • Creatively engages students through differentiated instruction
  • Exhibits a genuinely caring attitude toward all students
  • Maintains a positive, calm attitude and voice in the classroom
  • Works cooperatively with colleagues, volunteers, and parents
  • Incorporates appropriate instructional technology often
  • Attends various, limited after school activities such as Orientation, Parent-Teacher Conferences, and special seasonal events
  • Establishes classroom routines that align with best teaching practices
  • Follows the Rise Richmond Employee Manual and adheres to Rise Richmond’s mission and values
  • Abides by and holds students accountable to the Rise Academy Family Handbook
  • Attends at least one off-site Professional Development session for Art teachers per year

Required Qualifications

  • Faith in Jesus Christ, affirming the Apostles’ Creed and lived out in a faith community
  • A high school diploma or the equivalent and a bachelor’s degree in a related field such as Education or a scientific discipline from an accredited college or university;
  • Secondary Education teaching experience OR:
    • enrollment in a state-recognized teacher licensure program;
    • at least one year of programmatic experience with high school students;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and command of the English language
  • An intentional and practiced commitment to serving and engaging community in the East End

Preferred Qualifications

  • VA Professional Teachers Licensure with an endorsement in high school arts
  • Master’s Degree in Fine Arts

Position Overview & Compensation

  • Full-time, reports to school from 8:15 AM-4:00 PM, Monday through Friday
  • Exempt from overtime
  • Base salary of $48,727 for a full-year contract
  • Additional compensation for job-related pay factors (education, license, etc.)
  • $1,250 sign-on bonus
