Toeroek Associates is seeking an environmental scientist or engineer to provide Field Oversight support on challenging projects throughout the United States. Regulatory programs related to the project work include Superfund, Brownfields, RCRA, and state regulatory programs. This position entails oversight of contractors performing remedial investigation work at a mining area in New Mexico. Drilling will occur within large creek floodplain approximately 7 miles long; terrain may be variable. The schedule entails a rotation of 15 days in the field followed by four days off over a 6-month period.

We are seeking field geologist/hydrogeologist who can perform this 6-month field project, and then subsequently support other field projects and desk-top technical review projects. This position is available for individuals who can mobilize from Colorado, Albuquerque, NM, Oakland, CA, Phoenix, AZ, or Montana.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct Field Oversight of PRP contractors performing remedial investigation of contamination at mining area, ensuring compliance with all approved work plans, laws, regulations, and policy and guidance documents; technical issues include complex hydrogeology, surface water hydrology, geology, soils, chemical contaminant fate and transport, chemistry, geochemistry.
  • Oversee contractor's drilling, coring, sediment sampling operations, downhole geophysical logging, monitoring well installation, groundwater sampling, and aquifer testing, ensuring compliance with EPA-approved drilling program.
  • Visually observe and photograph cores and drill cuttings, specifically documenting key hydrogeologic features, including depth to base of alluvium, top of bedrock formations, saturation, and fractures, faults, and their orientations; also observe field geologist's selection of discrete core and sediment samples to ensure sampling is consistent with targeted intervals specified in Work Plan.
  • Review relevant geologic maps, cross sections, and geologic boring logs prior to and during the drilling/coring operations to anticipate the geology to be encountered during drilling.
  • Provide daily field reports to the client, including photographic documentation of field activities and geological cores and drill cuttings; identify any data gaps in the characterization of the Study Area hydrogeology and discuss them with the client.
  • Perform technical document reviews, verifying compliance with approved work plans, EPA and other federal guidance, state requirements, industry codes, and best practices.
  • Conduct technical reviews and preparing technical reports and other documents on topics associated with site investigation, characterization, remedial selection, and remedy implementation.

Required Education/Experience

BS degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field. 5+ years of practical experience related to overseeing and evaluating contaminated site characterization and remediation at contaminated sites, including Superfund, Brownfields, and RCRA Corrective Action sites; strong knowledge of federal and state environmental laws and regulations under federal, state, and other cleanup programs; 40-Hour HAZWOPER training and 8-hour refresher training.


Preferred Experience and Credentials

  • Hydrogeology experience and familiarity with faults/fractures
  • Prior experience with oil/gas exploration/logging is a plus
  • Experience with site investigations and remediation, including groundwater, surface water, sediment, soil, and vapor intrusion investigations

  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills, including attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness, as well as a commitment to producing high-quality deliverables
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Detailed, critical, and thoughtful writing and analysis skills
  • Knowledge of or experience in environmental information collection, analysis, interpretation, and report preparation
  • Ability to function as a member of a team and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks at once and meet deadlines, and adapt quickly and smoothly to changing project requirements
  • Proficient in Windows-based applications

This position's target salary hiring range is $55,000 - $75,000 annually, DOQ. This is a good faith and reasonable estimate of the base compensation at the time of posting.
