Add Health is a national study conducted by the Carolina Population Center (CPC) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and funded by the National Institute of Aging (NIA), the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), and the Office of the Director, National Institutes of Health (OD/NIH). Add Health has been gathering data about a group of young people who were first interviewed as teenagers in 1994 and 1995 and have been followed for nearly 30 years.  

The project is attempting to contact sample members who participated in 1994 and 1995 to interview them again. The full name of the study is the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Add Health Wave VI is being conducted to understand the life course exposures for health disparities and health among early midlife Americans, including cognitive, physical, and sensory functioning, substance use/abuse, mental health, and cardiometabolic health and well-being.

Field Interviewers are responsible for

• Traveling frequently to selected locations to recruit study participants and answer questions 
• Making in-person contact with selected respondents to discuss the study, answer questions, and obtain participation 
• Collecting confidential information and administering standardized questionnaires 
• Independently managing administrative duties, including participating in conference calls and completing online trainings 
• Transmitting data as scheduled 
• Assuming full and legal responsibility for use and care of project-issued equipment 
• Safeguarding any participant incentives, issued equipment, or project materials against damage, loss, or theft 
• Assuming responsibility for and carefully tracking all participant incentives 
• Submitting timely and accurate Time & Expense reports 
• Virtually attend scheduled meetings with other members of the project team including supervisor 
• Maintaining a variable work schedule, as dictated by case requirements 
• Position involves physical demands of carrying, lifting and climbing stairs. Physical effort includes supplies and equipment up to 15 lbs 

Minimum Required Qualifications 

• Must be at least 21 years old at time of employment 
• Must possess High School Diploma or GED
• Possess effective communication skills through speech and listening 
• Fluency in English through reading, writing, and speaking 
• Available for entire training and data collection period 
• Able to successfully complete training 
• Must have a valid driver's license and reliable personal automobile available for business use 
• Comfortable using RTI issued tablet, laptop and other associated equipment 
• Access to password protected WiFi connection for data transmission and administrative responsibilities 
• Able to keep project information confidential 
• Willingness to work in various types of weather conditions and after dark 
• Must be comfortable asking survey questions on personally sensitive subject matters 
• Must be willing to work evenings and weekends on a weekly and regular basis with occasional daytime hours during weekdays 
• Must be able to adjust schedule to meet respondents when they are available 
• Must be proficient in use of laptop and iPad when administering interview components 

Preferred Qualifications for Ideal Candidates 

• Positive, self-motivated, curious, and enjoy interacting with people from culturally diverse backgrounds 
• Effective time, schedule, and workload management skills to meet set deadlines 
• Computer skills, namely email and internet proficiency 
• Prior experience working on Add Health or on other surveys that involved interviewing individuals about personally sensitive subject matters  
• Available for occasional overnight travel 

• The data collection period is expected to be February 2024 through December 2024
• On average, you will be needed part-time approximately 20 hours per week when work is available
• On average, you should be available to work in the field 4-5 days each week
• The majority of this work is anticipated to be during evenings and weekends
• Each of your trips to the field are expected to be at least 4 hours long

Field Interviewers are required to complete trainings which include: 

• Complete self-study prior to attending training 
• Virtual pre-training January 26, 2024 
• Attend a 5 day in-person training tentatively scheduled for Jan 28, 2024 - Feb 2, 2024 in Raleigh/Durham, NC
• Successfully pass project required training certifications
• Attendance at all trainings is mandatory
