We're a commercial open source company based around the Python data stack, anchored on Dask, a library for parallel computing. We help data professionals use the cloud effectively using open source tools and our cloud deployment product, Coiled.
The Coiled product started really delighting people about nine months ago, and it's been fun seeing all the excitement from users, but also a little exhausting. We could use help, maybe yours?
We need someone who understands potential pitfalls in parallel computing, can engage with users technically, drives the automation of troubleshooting capabilities and is not afraid to work on a complex system.
The Job
Here's what we have in mind:
Work together with customers to improve their workloads
- You'll help them solve problems while running Dask on Coiled.
- You'll dive deep into Dask for them
- Customers might be technical or nontechnical, we see both as users today
Automate the customer support process
- You'll collect useful signs that signal that a user is having trouble
- You'll work on a system to automate this process and integrate it into our product
Who We're looking for
You're an extraverted engineer who likes in equal measure helping out customers, improving their workloads and driving observability development.
You've had a minimum of 3 years of experience in a customer facing role with a technical focus. This role will primarily be working with customers and colleagues in western Europe and the U.S. central and eastern timezones.
You should probably grok the following:
Python data stack (some of pandas, numpy, pytorch, ...)
"We should probably use Parquet here rather than CSV"
Parallel computing (things like Spark or Dask)
"It looks like we're network-bound here. We should consider partitioning our data differently"
Customer engagement (things like troubleshooting or iterating on workloads)
"It looks like you are having trouble getting this workload to run efficiently, we might be able to help you accelerate your processes."
You're comfortable working in an early stage context (low bureaucracy, high uncertainty), and are an open-minded thinker.
Cultural Caveats
We're a dynamic early stage startup. We hold some strong opinions that you should probably know going in.
Early stage: We believe in critical thinking, open discussion, and failing fast.
Fully remote, with offsites: We live in different cities, spread across US and Europe. We don't care where you live as long as timezones work well. We expect you to travel to meet in person every few months. We think better as a group when physically together.
Independent action with fuzzy roles: We're bad at managing people, so we expect you to self-manage well. This includes identifying priorities, communicating and engaging with the team, executing well, taking feedback, and course-correcting. In the course of this activity you'll likely do tasks outside of your stated role. Hopefully you're excited by that openness.
We fire people: The company moves quickly and sometimes excellent teammates stop being a good fit. In these cases we separate. You should only join us if you have some risk tolerance.
We find that this culture creates an environment that is intellectually stimulating, impact-oriented, and honest with itself (we avoid standard startup hype). If the cultural caveats above resonate with you then we're excited to meet you, regardless of your match for the position stated above.
