The Outside Plant Technicians (MDU Technicians) are dedicated to safely building, splicing, testing, and maintaining an all-fiber network in ALLO communities to provide maximum operating efficiency. ALLO MDU Techs understand how their role directly impacts ALLO growth and by meeting timely deliverables with high standards, they will ensure that customer needs and company goals can be met. ALLO MDU Techs will work closely with Leadership and Subject Matter Experts in their assigned content areas to stay current with procedures and processes.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare inside and outside fiber optical cable for new splicing, re-routing, and restoration.
  • Install, maintain and test aerial outside plant fiber, pole attachment and down-guy installation.
  • Use appropriate hand and power tools to properly measure, cut, bend, assemble and erect all components necessary for lifting, moving and installing plant materials in accordance with the applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards.
  • Dismantle, move, and remove aerial, underground or building wire, cable associated equipment and hardware.
  • Construct, install, and splice in several types of splice enclosures, fiber patch panels, and fiber termination frames using a Fusion type splicer.
  • Troubleshoot all aspects of the fiber network or individual circuits utilizing test equipment such as the OTDR, Power Meter-Light Source, Visible Light Source, and Fiber Finder.
  • Accurately locate underground cable and duct using cable locator.
  • Read and understand provided maps to identify underground fiber optics.
  • Verify the accuracy and notate any discrepancies relating to re-entry of all existing splice enclosures.
  • Inspect field related work performed by contractors for quality.
  • Accurately prepare all field reports relating to work accomplished on a daily basis.
  • Provide a safe working environment by being knowledgeable, enforce all state, local, and company safety procedures.
  • Operate and maintain company-owned vehicles. Inspect vehicle daily and maintain a valid driver's license and commercial license if applicable.
  • Maintain on-call responsibilities relating to emergency restoration as assigned.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork with zero errors.
  • When required, work with GIS personnel to ensure that up to date fiber maps are accurate for system and contract personnel.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Colorado residents: Typical pay for this role is $20.00 to $25.00 per hour depending on experience.
SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of ALLO installation-construction procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers and other employees.
  • Ability to work under pressure to successfully complete assigned tasks.
  • Ability to work with and understand Fiber Splicing designs.
  • Ability to safely use ladders, hooks, and aerial lift trucks.
  • Ability to operate company vehicles and maintain a driver's license, and commercial license if applicable, in good standing.
  • Knowledge of underground utility construction and your assigned geographic region.
  • Basic knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word and GIS.
  • Effectively communicate with internal and external customers, contractors and company employees.
  • Ability to walk up to 5 miles a day in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to bend/stoop/kneel/crawl
  • Flexibility and temperament to adapt to sudden challenges and changing work conditions
  • Willingness to change schedule at short notice to respond to emergency calls.
  • Availability for weekend on-call duty, as required
  • Ability to pass pre-employment background check and drug screen
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • See well enough to read manuals, operate test equipment and power tools. See well enough to distinguish colors used to identify individual fibers and to evaluate the quality of completed fiber construction.
  • Hear well enough to converse on a telephone or two-way radio, or communicate with customers or other employees.
  • Speak well enough to converse on the telephone or a two-way radio.
  • Body movement or mobility to climb and maintain balance on a ladder, utility pole or other high locations. Mobility or flexibility to crouch and crawl in tight spaces.
  • Dexterity to use hand tools and small power tools, and to complete necessary forms in a legible manner.
