Summary:

The Washington Center for Equitable Growth is actively committed to promoting and maintaining the importance of diversity to its work. This is a Bargaining Unit Position. This role requires a combination of onsite and remote work.

The Washington Center for Equitable Growth is a nonprofit research and grantmaking organization dedicated to advancing evidence-backed ideas and policies that promote strong, stable, and broad-based economic growth. Equitable Growth engages with academics and policymakers to better understand economic inequality in the United States and its impact on economic growth. Important elements of Equitable Growth's mission include grantmaking to academic economists and other social scientists to support new research on inequality, mobility, growth, and related issues, as well as work to apply the best available academic evidence to the policy world. Building a stronger bridge between academics and the policy community and elevating researchers and their work with the news media are both key to our work, with the goal of making new research relevant, accessible, and informative to the policymaking process.

The Center has an immediate opening for a Fellow on the Policy and Advocacy team who has experience in government and/or advocacy. The successful candidate will be able to perform with distinction the following responsibilities and meet the following qualifications:

Responsibilitiesinclude but are not limited to:

  • Generating evidence-backed policy proposals and policy reports.
  • Designing strategies to promote those policy ideas and working with people in government to advance them
  • Engaging with people in government as well as other stakeholders to explain the evidence behind certain policy ideas or concepts
  • Connecting with people at other think tanks and advocacy organizations to collaborate on policy work
  • Supporting scholars in the Equitable Growth network and beyond to make their work relevant for policymakers
  • Representing Equitable Growth to the media, policymakers, and other outside stakeholders
  • Guide RFP development and support grant review process
  • Other duties as assigned

Education

  • Advanced degree. Ph.D. preferred.

Qualifications

  • Five or more years of experience in policy; at least two years in senior government roles strongly preferred. Experience in advocacy preferred, including formulating plans with goals, strategy, and tactics.
  • Deep networks/relationships in government and within the think tank and advocacy community.
  • An understanding of levers for policy change (types of executive action, the role of Congressional hearings or GAO reports, etc.).
  • An understanding of how politics shapes the policy agenda.
  • A commitment to being evidence-based.
  • Comfort with reading and explaining academic social science research in the context of policy work.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to Equitable Growth's mission and goals.
