- Report to the principal or designee upon arrival at the school to determine assignment or placement for the day
- Implement existing lesson plans, ensuring the integrity of academic time and motivating students to learn and participate
- Maintain the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned
- Follow the lesson plans provided by the absent teacher or paraprofessional
- Interact in a professional manner with students and parents
- Encourage, monitor and promote student progress
- Maintain student confidentiality
- Oversee pupil behavior in the classroom, during lunch, activity periods, and out of class settings
- Provide a brief report in writing on the day’s activities at the conclusion of each day for the teacher
- Work cooperatively with all school personnel
- Follow all policies, rules and procedures to which teachers are subjected and good teaching practice dictates
- Adhere to the established FCCPS policies and regulations
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- The ability to manage classroom situations and provide instructions according to plans as prepared by the classroom teacher or paraprofessional
- The ability to provide a classroom environment which promotes active learning
- The ability to work with students to help reinforce learning objectives
- General knowledge of Falls Church City School Board's policies and procedures
- Skills in using appropriate judgment to act in the best interest of students at all times
- Readiness to execute other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to understand and follow directions
- High school diploma or GED along with some college or university credits
- Experience working with children preferred
- Sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls.
- Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, fax machine and projection and video devices.
- Ability to engage in significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions.

In the absence of the classroom teacher or paraprofessional, the substitute provides instruction, encourages student's progress and manages the learning environment. The PERMANENT SUBSTITUTE will report to the school each day and will be assigned to classrooms or duties as needed. The assigned classroom and duties will vary by the day and may vary throughout each individual day.
