The Fair Housing Program (FHP) is part of CTI’s Housing and Consumer Education Center (HCEC). The broad mission of the FHP is to promote housing equity, housing choice, and combat housing discrimination. As a part of the HCEC, the FHP also operates with the shared goal of helping clients maintain housing stability. The two primary activities in this program are assisting clients with housing rights issues and conducting education/outreach and trainings on Fair Housing.

We are seeking a Fair Housing Advocate,who will be responsible for promoting Fair Housing and housing equity through education and outreach activities and direct advocacy on civil rights in housing and tenant rights issues. Education and outreach activities are tailored to tenants/homebuyers, advocates and housing providers. Trainings topics cover a wide range of Fair Housing and tenant right issues with focus on effective advocacy and best practices. This position will work with the Fair Housing Coordinator to provide direct advocacy and tailored information to clients reporting housing discrimination and tenant rights violations. Other housing stability services offered in our Housing and Consumer Education Center will also be provided alongside housing rights advocacy.

Responsibilities Include but are not limited to the following:

1.Outreach and Networking

  • Conduct outreach to local community organizations, social services providers, residents, and housing providers on Fair Housing and tenant rights.
  • Establish key contacts and working relationships in the community to promote Fair Housing and housing equity.
  • Develop outreach materials and resources.

2.Advocacy

  • Develop community relationships to promote Fair Housing and housing equity
  • Attend and advocate at community organizations and events.
  • Work with community partners to increase information and knowledge of Fair Housing
  • Be able to refer tenants and homebuyers to Fair Housing enforcement organizations.

3.Trainings

  • Assist with development of trainings that promote effective advocacy and best practices around housing rights.
  • Administer trainings to tenants, homebuyers, social service organizations, and housing providers
  • Be familiar with CTI’s other Fair Housing activities and trainings.

4.Reporting

  • Assist with collecting qualitative and quantitative data on program activities.
  • Assist with reporting on program activities to grant funders.

5.Complaint Work

  • Manage Fair Housing complaints.
  • Work with the Fair Housing Coordinator to provide technical assistance and help clients file housing discrimination complaints, request reasonable accommodations, and engage in other client advocacy activities.
  • Provide additional housing stability services to clients that are being assisted with Fair Housing advocacy.

6.Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

College preferred; High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Bilingual skills (English/Spanish or English/Khmer) a plus.

2-3 years of experience with community organizing/outreach/advocacy work

Excellent customer service, organizational, oral and written communication skills.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and work in a fast-paced environment.

Proficient computer skills required in basic computer software and data collection systems.

Ability to work effectively with people from a diverse range of backgrounds, cultures, and identities, including underserved communities.
