Salary:

Full-time position in Houston, Texas, with competitive pay, full benefits, and opportunities to build a rewarding career with IRISNDT. The Failure Analysis Engineer will direct detailed failure investigations of metallic, polymeric, and composite materials and communicate findings to clients and stakeholders.

Duties/Responsibilities Include:

  • Complete other related duties as required including, but not limited to, completion of lab work in support of ongoing failure investigations (e.g. photography of samples in the laboratory and locations at sites, preparation of metallographic samples for analysis, microscopy, etc.)
  • Prepare detailed technical reports;
  • Communication with internal and external clients to define the required scope of analysis/investigation;
  • Project management, including providing technical direction to internal staff and 3rd party vendors;
  • Analysis and interpretation of data/test results;
  • Provide direction and support for field engineering services;
  • Clearly communicate investigation progress and findings to stakeholders in both written and oral formats;

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent English language verbal and written communications skills;
  • Ability to communicate complicated technical details clearly and concisely to a variety of stakeholders;
  • Extensive knowledge of metallurgy (carbon steel and stainless steel microstructures)
  • Knowledge of other non-metallic materials and processes;
  • Knowledge of analytical and investigative techniques such as SEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, OES, etc;
  • Working knowledge of common industry standards (ASME, API, ASTM, etc.)
  • Familiarity with common damage mechanisms in the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office suite;
  • Must be organized, detail oriented, and have the ability to prioritize tasks in an interactive environment;
  • Valid Driver’s License and pre-employment background checks will be required;
  • Familiarity with common non-destructive inspection techniques is considered an asset.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in materials, welding, chemical, mechanical engineering, or related post-secondary education with commiserate professional experience;
  • 10-15 years’ experience;
  • Candidates with experience working in a plant/refinery setting and/or in heavy industry (Mining, Oil & Gas, Petrochemical) are preferred;
  • Professional memberships, certifications, or affiliations (API, NACE, ASM, AWS) are considered an asset.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer;
  • Some occasional operation of hand tools and machinery may be required (e.g. angle grinder, band saw, plasma cutter, polishing wheel, etc.)
  • Manipulation and/or lifting of heavy or awkward components (≤ 50 lb.)
  • Occasional outdoor/site work may be required with exposure to heat, cold, rain, uneven terrain, etc. and restricted access requiring the use of ladders, stairs, or platforms.
