Job description

                                                                                     UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh
University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
                                                                                                 Department of Pediatrics
Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine
The Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at the UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and the Department of Pediatrics, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is recruiting an educator at the rank of Instructor on the non-tenure track. The ideal candidate for this position would have completed an M.Ed degree (or equivalent) and training in Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine. The candidate should be an experienced educator with expertise in diversity, equity, inclusion, and community-partnered research to lead efforts within the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and in the Department of Pediatrics to enhance our commitment to addressing racism in medicine and integrating anti-racist practices into health professional training.

The Anti-Racist and Health Equity Solutions (AHES) course is a 6-session course for medical students in the first and second year of their training. The goal of this course is for students to recognize structural racism, and its impacts on healthcare delivery, population health, the science of medicine, and medical education. In addition, students will learn strategies to address racism and its effects. The 6 sessions cover a wide range of topics from the use of race in clinical algorithms and racism in medical education to intersectionality, the criminal justice system, immigrants, and refugees, LGBTQIA communities, and structural racism in healthcare. These topics will be reviewed, discussed, and critiqued in small group sessions guided by faculty facilitators. To achieve the course objectives, the learners will critically examine selected videos, literature, patient cases, and discussion prompts and formulate strategies to combat racism in medicine.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of clinicians, educators, community members, and researchers whose expertise spans adolescent and young adult medicine, social epidemiology, pediatrics, internal medicine, anthropology, education, and public health. The Division is home to the Center for Adolescent and Young Adult Health, a medical clinic specializing in care for adolescents up to age 26. The mission of the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine is to improve the health and well-being of all youth. We achieve our mission through conducting innovative, community-partnered research, providing accessible and equitable healthcare services for adolescents in the context of their family, culture, and community, and offering interdisciplinary adolescent healthcare education for health professional trainees and practitioners. Our Division faculty holds multiple federal and foundation grants, with programs to understand inequities in adolescent health, promote adolescent health equity, and improve adolescent health outcomes. We are committed to engaging with youth in their communities as their allies and advocates, and we partner with experts in the community to reach these goals. Division faculty lead institutional initiatives in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Faculty specialize in violence prevention, mental health, substance use disorder prevention and treatment, sexual and reproductive health, LGBT health, gender-affirming care, obesity prevention and management, eating disorders, college health, services for youth experiencing marginalization (e.g., youth who are unhoused, system-involved), community health (including mobile services), telemedicine, and transition care. Areas of potential interest to the Division's growing program include optimizing education and training in anti-racism and emphasis on community-partnered health equity research.
