Job Summary
The College of Science invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, Faculty Research Assistant: NMR Facilityposition. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
The NMR FacilityFaculty Research Assistant will be in charge of maintaining cryogen levels in the NMR spectrometers, assisting NMR facility users as needed, and preparing and analyzing samples for NMR facility clients as needed. The incumbent is expected to contribute to the development of funding proposals for new equipment in the facility, and may also contribute to research proposals and manuscripts. In addition, the incumbent will work with the Director to maintain the NMR spectrometers, order supplies, run calibration procedures, and participate in user training. To learn new skills, travel of up to 2x per year in one week intervals may be required Good written and oral communication skills and good frequency of communication with the director are key elements of the job.

Key Responsibilities
20% Prepare samples for NMR and analyze samples with NMR for NMR Facility users.
20% Assist NMR facility users to collect, analyze, interpret and draw conclusions from the data. Assist users with incorporating data into publications and/or grant proposals as needed. May also contribute to research proposals and manuscripts.
20% In coordination with the director, teach users how to safely operate the instruments. This may include teaching 1-1.5 hour training sessions and 1 on 1 training sessions with facility users.
20% Assist with maintaining instruments: Including, but not limited to doing weekly cryogen fills, routine shimming, and troubleshooting instrument failures. Work with the director as a team to order consumables for the NMR facility and carry out other maintenance tasks as needed.
10% Assist with marketing the facility by helping with creation of marketing materials, web site content, posters, presentations and attending professional meetings.
5% Develop and/or implement new procedures or experiments for NMR facility users.
5% Assist with writing proposals for new NMR Facility equipment.
What You Will Need
  • A bachelor's degree in a STEM field.
  • Experience in NMR spectroscopy.
  • Hands on experience with operation of NMR spectrometers.
  • Experience with processing, analyzing and interpreting NMR data.
  • Experience with developing a study plan for NMR based analysis, such that the incumbent would be comfortable advising NMR users on the best set of NMR experiments to answer the proposed research question.
  • Basic trouble shooting skills for help finding root cause issues on the instruments.
  • A willingness to learn and ability to ask for help when needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • A familiarity with solid state magic angle spinning NMR is a plus.
  • Familiarity with electronics and electronic trouble shooting would be helpful.
  • Experience with Linux based computers and their operation/management
  • Experience handling cryogens and/or performing cryogen fills on NMR magnets would be helpful.
  • Experience with protein expression and purification would be a plus.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Onsite work is expected Monday-Friday. Must be able to work occasional evenings/weekends as needed in emergency situations.
  • This position is performed in a laboratory setting which includes handling of chemicals, biological materials and other common laboratory items.
  • Requires heavy lifting/ pushing/ pulling, which may include: Moving of heavy cryogen dewars on wheels (around 300 lbs) Occasionally need to move spectrometer parts that weigh around 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to travel to attend training courses and conferences.
  • Requires driving to the HP/ATAMI site in Corvallis to maintain the spectrometer at this location.
