Job Title: Head Custodian

Reports to:Director of Facilities and Principal

Evaluated by:Director of Facilities and Principal

Summary: Seeking a highly motivated, hardworking and energetic individual with an eye for detail that takes initiative and welcomes responsibility. The successful candidate is responsible for all phases of cleaning and maintenance of the facilities interior, exterior and grounds as directed. These duties will include but are not limited to: daily floor care, dusting, restroom cleaning and sanitation, cleaning of fixtures and furniture, interior and exterior trash removal, window cleaning, painting, furniture repair and assembly, snow removal and additional tasks as necessary to ensure all facilities are maintained at a high level of cleanliness and readiness.

Job Purpose: To lead and manage custodial staff relating to the care and maintenance of the school building and related equipment; all other work as required. The first respondent to building related emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or GED, college advantageous. Ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to understand and apply regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines; Punctual, initiative taking, responsibility seeking, ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others; ability to stand or walk for prolonged periods of time; ability to lift and carry heavy objects, 65 lbs min; ability to climb and work on ladders and scaffolds; ability to work in foul weather environments, physical stamina and endurance; manual dexterity; mechanical aptitude. Verified supervision experience in a facilities management setting with 5 years minimum experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Ability to handle last minute requests, multi tasking and emergency cleaning response. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse work environment with staff, students and public. Ability to handle frequent interruptions. Ability to be attentive to details to ensure accuracy and precision. Ability to work in a team environment and work independently with minimal supervision. Incumbent must be a self-starter who takes initiative in all aspects of the job.

GeneralResponsibilities:

  • Must be capable of leading and managing day and evening custodial staff. Must have the ability to multi-task, prioritize tasks, and direct custodial staff as needed.
  • Must be familiar with all operating systems of building including, but not limited to: heating and ventilation, plumbing, electrical, lighting, emergency/fire, security, wells, sewage disposal, general building condition, grounds, etc. Report any deficiencies or potential problems to the School Principal and the Director of Facilities.
  • Recommend purchases for custodial, building, and maintenance supplies and materials to the School Principal and/or Director of Facilities for everyday needs and budgetary purposes.
  • Maintain inventory of custodial and facility related supplies and materials.
  • Must be able to work with contractors with regard to building maintenance and repair.
  • Monitor, manage, and order custodial and building consumable supply inventories.
  • Instruct and supervise custodial staff routine maintenance and basic repair of physical plant, proper equipment maintenance (use and operation), as well as proper cleaning and sanitation procedures.
  • Familiarize custodial staff with building layout including mechanical spaces.
  • Ensure all staff know emergency protocol and current contractors.
  • Ensure all custodial staff can satisfactorily operate custodial and maintenance equipment.
  • Ensure staff are familiar with District guidelines and policies.
  • Cleans and disinfects rooms, furniture, washrooms, toilets, cafeteria, etc.; polishes furniture, floors, and metal work; vacuums and cleans rugs; washes woodwork and windows, cleans and disinfects floors; strip and finish floors; dispose of trash, cleans glass, etc.
  • Performs minor carpentry, plumbing, and electrical duties assigned by the School Principal and/or the Director of Facilities. Operates heating and cooling systems and safety controls; moves and sets up furniture and equipment as needed. Required to perform seasonal functions i.e.: snow/ice removal, maintain grounds, summer preparation of school, outside repairs, painting, etc. Some tasks may require overtime hours.
  • Schedule must be flexible for daytime work hours during school vacation weeks and summer.
  • Responsible for opening and lock-up of school and for building security.
  • Must be able to work in conditions with exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, chemicals, and various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to operate vacuums, buffers, floor strippers, auto-scrubbers, carpet cleaners, and other equipment and be aware of safely precautions and implement safety procedures.
  • Works independently to complete assigned task and cleaning schedule.
  • Provides support and supervision of evening uses of school facilities.
  • Conducts weekend checks to verify proper building system operations, etc.
  • Will be responsible to respond to after hour emergencies or other building coverage as needed.
  • Receive and store deliveries to school and school kitchen.
  • Must be capable of lifting items and/or packages in excess of sixty-five (65) pounds.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by the School Principal and/or the Director of Facilities.

Requirements: On call 24/7 for snow removal and facility emergencies. Must have dependable all-weather transportation. CORI background check and a Pre-Employment physical exam are required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $22.19 - $27.30 per hour
