Job description

Johns Hopkins Facilities and Real Estate (JHFRE) is seeking a Facilities GIS (Geographic Information systems) Intern to participate in GIS and EDMS (enterprise document management system) activities in support of Facilities operations at Johns Hopkins campuses. As part of the JHFRE IT (information technology) team, the intern will report to the JHFRE GIS Manager and will work to collect information related to buildings and assets. This position includes both office-based and field-based work.
Field-based assignments include data collection outdoors on campuses and indoors at campus buildings. Data may include photos, GPS-based asset location, asset attributes entered into mobile enterprise IT software platforms and devices provided by JHFRE. Office-based assignments may include data management, post processing, indexing of authoritative documents, digitizing, and preparing and delivering maps.
The intern will conduct in-person or remote check-in and check-out calls each day with the GIS Manager to review tasks, issues, and other requirements. The intern will also attend weekly IT team meetings. This position is in person only.
Note: This position is not benefits eligible.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work on initiatives to enhance the integration of the EDMS and GIS platforms.
  • Contribute to the Enterprise Document Management System (EDMS) by archiving and indexing authoritative documents related to assets and facilities.
  • Perform field data collection and surveying of campus facilities and exterior assets using mobile devices and applications.
  • Perform GIS data updates, data management, and analysis to support development and maintenance of GIS data products.
  • Produce printed and/or web-based maps to support JHFRE operations.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School/GED required.
  • 2 years related experience.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program (Associate's or Bachelor's) in the following fields: geography, GIS, environmental sciences, engineering, or related fields.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Experience with conducting on-site field measurements, surveys, and data collection.
  • Experience with GPS and GIS software solutions is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Outlook, Word.
  • Ability to produce accurate, timely delivery of complex materials.
  • Organized. Able to prioritize and accomplish a wide variety and scale of projects.
  • Committed to the mission of the University, customer service, and best practices in GIS and data management.

Communication
  • Exchanges routine and non-routine information with staff, faculty, students, and vendors using effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Communicates daily with the JHFRE GIS Manager via Zoom, Teams, and in person.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to navigate the University's various physical locations to collect data/information using field data collection equipment (mobile GPS, tablet computer, camera, laser measuring device).
  • Ability to work in a stationary position in an office environment for extended periods of time.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
