GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Iowa Cannabis Company in Iowa City, IA is currently seeking an Extraction Manager to join our team at our state-of-the-art cannabis production facility. Join us in our mission to provide high-quality medical cannabis products to patients across Iowa. As a leader in the industry, we are committed to innovation and excellence in the extraction process. The Extraction Manager will oversee the entire extraction operation, ensuring efficiency, compliance, and the production of premium cannabis extracts. This role is responsible for managing a team of extraction technicians, maintaining equipment, implementing quality control measures, and improving operational processes. We currently operate three medical dispensaries in the state of Iowa, along with our medical cannabis manufacturing facility. 

JOB SUMMARY

The Extraction Manager is a full-time position. The Extraction Manager oversees and manages all technical operations of the lab. This role must utilize their experience in chromatography, microbiological analysis, and other chemical methods. The Extraction Manager will work with the management team in establishing and implementing standard operating procedures, selecting staff, and developing the lab's team of qualified employees. All lab operation activities fall under the manager's duties, which include but are not limited to program results, lab costs, hiring, quality assurance, and project development. The Extraction Manager oversees all the tasks necessary to process extractions using various methods, the processing of edibles, cartridges, and other manufactured cannabis products.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee all cannabis extraction and refinement operations including scheduling, reviewing, and preparing the extraction process in accordance with state and local standards
  • Manage a team of personnel through the entire extraction process from the preparation of equipment to the complete cannabis extraction
  • Create, maintain, and implement best practices to include accurate safety data sheets (SDS) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for all chemicals, processes, and procedures for the laboratory to meet safety and compliance standards
  • Drive scaling of all process operations and labor to support forecasted demand, planning, and on-time delivery of products
  • Capture critical and key process data to effectively track yields, machine up time, through-put, labor, utilization, etc. and create visible KPIs
  • Follow standard operating procedures
  • Implement good agricultural practices and follow all facility rules
  • Keep good records and follow good documentation practices
  • Oversee operations of Precision Extract Machinery using hydrocarbons
  • Maintain and operate short path and wipe film distillation and extraction equipment
  • Responsible for utilizing all required processes while maintaining a clean and sterile workplace
  • Responsible for producing distillate, wax, shatter, diamonds, sauce, and crumble products
  • Work with the team to ensure product integrity through the entire extraction process
  • Conform with all regulatory, compliance and safety requirements including wearing protective clothing and gear when handling hazardous chemicals
  • Identifying and implementing new technologies and methodologies to improve laboratory workflow, extractions product development and data quality as financially possible
  • Ensuring the constant improvement of the team's knowledge base on lab procedures and extraction methods including safety awareness, knowledge of hazards, OSHA, Food Safety, company standards and quality control
  • Ensuring regulatory compliance, including safety, environmental and document control requirements
  • Providing technical guidance to the facility with respect to any technical questions or new services
  • Analyzing production requirements and work assignments based upon capacity to achieve production schedule and departmental objectives. Promoting an environment of continual improvement and open communication with all levels of staff
  • Planning and organizing production schedules and coordinating with operations personnel to identify and address market opportunities and operational weakness
  • Develop strategies to increase productivity and production with existing methodologies.
  • Oversee preparation of equipment and plant material for extractions.
  • Assist in company product formulations of various types with specific cannabinoid ratios.
  • Calculate input requirements, assemble, and weigh plant materials and supplies.
  • QA/QC duties that require analytical testing for quality and consistency and data review.
  • Operate extraction and post-processing equipment; process concentrates and extracts.
  • Operate, maintain, and adjust and repairs laboratory equipment such as liquid chromatography systems, pumps, balances, centrifuges, and other laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain inventory records of supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Store supplies and equipment, dispose of waste according to guidelines, and keep laboratory, storerooms and working areas immaculate.
  • Wash and sterilize laboratory glassware.
  • Maintain SOPs, training records, and related documentation.
  • Maintain material safety data sheets for all department chemicals and products.
  • Oversee a clean lab environment and maintain immaculate extraction and laboratory environments adhering to Current Good Laboratory Practice (cGLP) and Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards.
  • Maintain strict inventory records and of all plant materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding sensitive information, such as strains, genetics, proprietary cultivation techniques and other sensitive information.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Job duties may include work indoors and outdoors during all seasons, 365 days/year.
  • Employees may be exposed to difficult or stressful vendor, customer, or employee situations requiring patience and professionalism to effectively handle.
  • Work duties may require sedentary activities, active standing, stooping and/or kneeling. 
  • Production facility operates 365 days a year with shifts typically occurring between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.  Job responsibilities occasionally fall outside of typical shifts. 
  • Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, and safety glasses.
  • The production facility may have strong odors and varying temperatures due to the cultivation and processing of cannabis.
  • Employees may be required to work in confined spaces, such as plant growing areas or extraction rooms.
  • Exposure to potential allergens, such as pollen or plant materials.
  • The use of chemicals and pesticides is common in a cannabis production facility, which may require employees to follow strict safety protocols and wear additional PPE.
  • Noise levels in the facility may be loud due to equipment or machinery operations.
  • The facility has strict security measures, including video surveillance and restricted access, to ensure compliance with regulations and prevent theft.
  • Regular cleaning and sanitization of the work area required to maintain a safe and hygienic environment.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to regularly lift 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 200 pounds with assistance.
  • Must be able to complete job duties that involve frequent bending, reaching, and carrying of heavy materials or equipment.
  • Must be able to stand for up to eight hours per day.
  • Must be able to proficiently operate computers, tablets and other productivity machinery and technology.
  • Must be able to reliably arrive at work on time for scheduled shifts.
  • Must be able to ascend/descend a ladder to service displays, products, or service ceiling lights.
  • Must be able to type at least 40 words per minute.
  • Must be able to move about the retail store, as needed, to assist customers and perform required functions.
  • Must be able to remain in a designated work area for up to eight hours per day with the exception of breaks as required by law. 
  • Must be able to position oneself to access products within all areas of the production facility.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate information and ideas so vendors, customers and coworkers will understand. Must be able to convey and exchange accurate information in these situations.   
  • Must be able to continue to assist vendors, customers and coworkers during and after stressful situations resulting from interactions.
  • Must be able to accurately observe details at close range in order to recognize, identify, detect, determine and assess objects.
  • Must be able to prepare, place and position retail products or items.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate information displayed on digital screens.
  • Must be able to perform other job duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in related field - Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry or Life Sciences with 1+ years of experience in a regulated plant extraction or 3+ years of cannabis extraction experience
  • Strong scientific background with process validation (SPC-statistical process control) experience.
  • A thorough understanding of the fundamentals of solventless extraction, CO2 extraction, butane extraction and distillation.
  • Technical problem-solving skills in a processing plant environment and of chemical processing equipment, specifically Supercritical Fluid Extraction-SFE) and post processing techniques.
  • Strong background in extraction techniques (e.g. SFE) and wet chemistry, along with a research mindset.
  • Knowledge of cannabinoids, terpenes, and their medicinal benefits is preferred.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, familiarity with METRC and supplementary tracking software. Record production and test data for each product batch, such as the ingredients used, temperature, test results, and time cycle, and pressures during the extraction process.
  • Commercial solventless extraction experience 
  • Familiarity with OSHA guidelines for dealing with hazardous chemicals
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be and remain compliant with any and all regulatory requirements for working in the cannabis industry
  • Must be able to internalize training and follow instructions consistently
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Travel maybe required
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
