Job description

The Experienced Clinical Nurse on the Surgical Urology/Orthopedic unit at MD Anderson Cancer Center manages patient outcomes by providing, coordinating and supporting clinical aspects of direct patient care across the continuum of care. They impact quality of patient care, patient outcomes and use of resources in a designated area in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
Shift will be 7am- 7pm, with rotating weekends and holidays required.
The Surgical Urology/Orthopedic unit is a 32 bed unit for an adult patient population. This fast-paced environment has rapid turnover for surgical procedures which include postoperative prostatectomy, cystectomy, penectomy, nephrectomy, and orthopedic surgeries. Unique postoperative care of hemipelvectomy, flap monitoring, and testicular cancer surgeries are also managed on this unit. The team uses an interdisciplinary collaborative approach to patient care. Integrated in our nursing practice are tools used to maximize the skills of team members to achieve optimal outcome and improved healthcare quality.
Nursing division surgical units provide care for patients that require complex postoperative nursing care, including pain management, frequent monitoring, management of complex wounds and cardiac monitoring. Complex surgical procedures, common to MD Anderson, include hemipelvectomies, hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPECs) and microvascular reconstructive surgeries. Services across this cohort provide specialized care that would otherwise be provided in an intensive care setting.
Hourly breakdown of salary range:
Minimum $32.69 - Midpoint $48.56 - Maximum $64.42

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Accountable for the management and provision of patient care in assigned area. Assesses patient's needs for nursing care and multidisciplinary team. Collaborates with physicians, other services, patient and patient's family to plan care and evaluate outcomes. Improves practice by integrating results and theories of research studies. Participates in data collection for current studies. Demonstrates clinical competency and compassion in providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies. Documents care according to established standards. Accesses, inputs and retrieves information from computer systems. Assures continuity of care through appropriate discharge planning, patient education and coordination of services. Acts as a patient and family advocate in order to uphold patient rights. Trains, coaches and assists team members to ensure optimum patient care and efficient use of resources.
EDUCATION:
Required: Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: All Clinical Nurses with less than one year registered nurse (RN) work experience will be required to participate in the Clinical Nurse Residency Program. This position is not eligible for the residency program.
Preferred: At least one year of experience working as a registered nurse.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:
Required: Current Registered Nurse license (RN).
