Clinical Exercise Physiologist

Position Summary
 

The Clinical Exercise Physiologist for the Cardiovascular, Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Preventative Cardiology Department is responsible for the exercise prescription, education and lifestyle modifications of patients recovering from myocardial infarction, post trans coronary intervention, open heart surgery, heart valve surgery and other interventional strategies for CAD as well as other patient populations including CHF, pulmonary diseases, and peripheral artery disease (PAD). These applications will be extended to other patient populations with comorbid conditions and chronic diseases. The Clinical Exercise Physiologist provides direct patient care including initial patient assessment, development, and adjustment of progression of activity and/or exercise prescriptions and plan of care, implementation of individual and group education sessions and supervision of exercise classes at hospital and off-site locations.  This role will support the inpatient and outpatient settings.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Inpatient:
    • Provides activity and mobility progression for inpatients in the hospital.  Recognizes contraindications to activity and abnormal patient responses.
    • Provides education, including post discharge instruction to patients and family members
  • Outpatient:
    • Performs assessment of patients and develops plan of care with other staff.
    • Prepares or adjusts the individual exercise prescription for each patient based on Functional Capacity Assessment or GXT results and M.D. recommendations.  Works collaboratively with all team members to review each patient’s progress regularly.
    • Performs group warmup and cooldown exercises. Demonstrates proper exercise form and correct use of aerobic and resistance exercise equipment.
    • Monitors patients using telemetry, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, and clinical assessment skills and responses to abnormal conditions.
    • Provides patient/family knowledge of health status, assesses readiness for discharge from program and supportive services needed.  Enters initial and daily assessment data into patient’s electronic medical record.
    • Immediately reports changes in patient condition to physicians.  Assists with emergency care accordingly.  Follows policies and procedures and standard of care related to the department.
    • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Position Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science or related field. 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (Must be obtained within 6 months of hire)
  • Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-CEP) certification (must be obtained within 12 months of hire)
  • 1 year of experience in Cardiac and/or Pulmonary Rehabilitation setting preferred

Essential Skills

  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, and kinesiology
  • Strong EKG interpretation skills
  • Knowledge of cardiovascular and pulmonary risk factors
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Strong leadership skills
