The Opportunity
Creates the short-term and long-term strategies for significant enterprise innovation initiatives and sets objectives that align with enterprise strategies. Leads teams that determine the business need for innovation concepts, evaluate business applicability and feasibility, conduct business, and market assessments, and introduce/execute emerging innovative capabilities into the company in close partnership with business strategic planning stakeholders. Accountable for driving the introduction, development, and implementation of innovation, both incremental and strategic, to support continued growth of existing USAA business or new business.
The Opportunity
What you'll do:
  • Accountable for teams that design and develop enterprise integrated solutions enterprise products, solutions and capabilities for USAA members and employees.
  • Provides executive leadership and guidance through the ideation and incubation cycle, evaluating feasibility and viability of innovative concepts, focusing on analyzing, positioning, packaging, promoting and tailoring solutions to the markets and segments that USAA serves.
  • Leads the group to build business cases for potentially profitable ideas.
  • Proposes ideas to senior company leadership for approval, funding, and sponsorship for full-scale development.
  • Creates and models a culture of innovation and entrepreneurial risk-taking via "testing and learning".
  • Directs area budget, monitors allocation, and directs expenditures.
  • Responsible for continuous transformation of the core business processes that are owned and managed by innovation.
  • Leads and enables process execution, planning, managing, and developing process activities.
  • Controls its execution and performance and adjusts them according to market and customer requirements.
  • Role models USAA's mission, core values, culture, and desired behaviors - including a culture of risk and regulatory awareness and accountability balanced with member-service orientation and partner needs.
  • Partners with IT to ensure innovation capabilities align to architectural and system standards, promoting a consistent USAA approach to the deployment of global platforms and standards.
  • Builds and manages a high performing team of analytical, business, and technical professionals through ongoing execution of recruiting, training, retention, coaching and support, performance management, and related managerial activities.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:
  • Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 10 years of progressive experience developing innovation strategies and/or managing major large-scale initiatives encompassing the end-to-end innovation process and delivering results within a complex matrix environment.
  • 5 years of experience in Innovation, R&D, new product development, or startup.
  • 6 years of people leadership experience, managing and/or developing high performing teams.
  • Experience collaborating with key resources and stakeholders, influencing decisions, and managing work to achieve strategic goals.
  • Executive level business acumen in the areas of business operations, industry practices and emerging trends.
  • Demonstrated expert experience shaping and driving strategic agendas, inclusive of strategic visioning, expert data synthesis, and high-profile communications (compelling, high impact storyteller).
  • Experience with implementing innovative technologies and solutions which have been incorporated into the business vs. theoretical strategies.
  • Experience developing short-term and long-term strategies for innovation portfolio and key initiatives including setting objectives that align with LOB and enterprise strategies and roadmaps and managing the P&L.
  • Extensive knowledge and application of risk and compliance framework with experience integrating risk mitigation strategies while developing innovative strategies and concepts for business initiatives.

What sets you apart:
  • Property and Casualty insurance experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and influencing senior leadership teams.
  • Strong understanding and experience with rapid experimentation tactics (human centered design, lean startup, etc.).
  • Demonstrated accomplishments leading innovation initiatives from strategy to execution.
  • Subject matter expertise in AI, ML, entering new markets and enabling new technologies.
  • Experience partnering with tech companies and startups.
  • US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner.

What we offer:
Compensation:
USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market position. The salary range for this position is: $180,500.00-325,000.00.
Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance or at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
Long Term Incentive Plan: Cash payment for Executive level roles only, representing a cash payment which is both time and performance based.
