Executive Director of Teaching and Learning Design

Job Summary:
The Executive Director of Teaching and Learning Design is considering an organizational leader and has the responsibility to oversee the implementation and the D51 Strategic Plan and the Teaching & Learning Framework (TLF). This position oversees efforts to increase student development by promoting and evaluating outcomes toward an aligned and coherent learning system including supervising the departments of Curriculum, Assessment, College and Career Readiness, Career and Technical Education (CTE), and Professional Learning. The Executive Director role champions the District-wide vison for a commitment to high expectations and for the success of ALL students. In addition, and as assigned, this position may also oversee a variety of applicable operational systems, including developing school site support services, overseeing staffing needs, and managing financial budgets and obligations. The Executive Director role is a member of the Instructional leadership Team working to implement the Board of Education (BOE) vision and participating in developing long-term and strategic goals.

District Leadership and Administration Delivery:
This position supervises the development of academic, community and alternative partnerships that provide educational experiences/opportunities for all students K-12. Working collaboratively with District leadership, staff, as well as state and national partners, the Executive Director is responsible for:
  • Overseeing the Director of Curriculum, Director of Assessment, Director of Career and Technology/College & Career Ready, and the Director of Professional Learning to ensure coherence and consistency in the implementation of the D51 Strategic Plan and the TLF.
  • Contributing to and leading long-range planning processes at the departmental and organizational levels;
  • Collaborating with the Aligned Professional Learning Advisory Board (APLAB) team members to develop strategic implementation plans;
    • Reviewing and approving Board of Education proposals for development of policy,
    • Development of annual goals and action plans for implementing the D51 Strategic Plan & TLF,
    • Ensuring coherence and consistency in the implementation across all District sites.
  • Overseeing the alignment and design of professional learning in the areas of school leadership, instructional design, and coaching.
  • Co-facilitating the setting of goals and standards and making decisions that help guide Mesa County Valley School District 51 in the transition and implementation of the D51Strategic Plan and the TLF;
  • Supports ways to pursue funding opportunities by attending and joining the state and national focus that aligns to our D51 Strategic Plan and the TLF. Join committees, boards, and attend relevant conferences to nurture and grow our network.
  • Developing dynamic, innovative programming to align with student needs, current employment demands, and trends;
  • Continuously monitor and be knowledgeable of current and future post-secondary academic and vocational programs, opportunities, demands/trends locally, regionally, and nationally;
  • Using data to analyze the current status of student learning and to serve as a catalyst for, benchmark of growth and continuous improvement.

Instructional Leadership and Delivery
Working to foster an organizational culture-of-mutual trust, a primary responsibility of the Executive Director role is to actively collaborate with the Senior leadership, Directors, Coordinators, Instructional Leaders, and other assigned staff in the development of annual goals and action plans for ensuring coherence and consistency in implementing the D51 Strategic Plan and the TLF. Duties and expectations of the ED toward this goal include:
  • Supporting Senior Leadership, other Executive Directors, Directors, Coordinators, and Instructional Leaders in developing district and school-wide systems that ensure ALL students advance toward the attainment of college and career readiness, including;
    • Developing dynamic, innovative programming to align with student needs, current employment demands, and trends;
    • Overseeing the development of curriculum and instructional programs that recognize the contributions of diverse groups and foster success for all students regardless of gender, sex, and/or disability;
    • Guiding and overseeing the use of technology in instructional programs, & programming, including the role of online learning and learning management systems.
    • Working and brainstorming with other departments and central office leaders to provide essential resources and support District wide;
    • Working as a change leader in support of district initiatives, school innovation, and the pursuit of positive student outcomes;
    • Engaging with internal and external stakeholders to promote district efforts to support ALL learners through the implementation of our D51 Strategic Plan and the TLF;
    • Supporting school administrators toward effective leadership at the intersection of social, emotional, and academic issues while facilitating support for our D51 Social and Emotional Learning Framework;
    • Collaborating with MTSS team to assist with strategic planning to support better student outcomes
    • Integrating school climate, social-emotional learning (SEL), and behavioral intervention strategies in network and school Professional Development, PLC activities, assessments, walk-thrus, and principal meetings;

Instructional Design & Curriculum Delivery:
Leadership in our dynamic educational organization requires an understanding of the philosophy of standards-based education, the D51 Strategic Plan and the Teaching Learning Framework, the processes of curriculum development, and its effectiveness in the school. A primary responsibility of the Executive Director role is to actively collaborate with the Directors, Site and Instructional Leaders and other assigned staff in the development of annual goals and action plans. The ED ensures coherence and consistency in programming across Curriculum and Resource Development, Assessment, Professional Learning, College & Career Readiness, and Federal Programs.
  • Supporting the development and implementation of the Teaching and Learning Framework through contributions to district planning and oversight of professional learning;
  • Ensuring instructional programs that recognize the contributions of diverse groups and foster success for all students regardless of gender, sex, and/or disability;
  • Collaborating with Senior and other District Leadership as well as community collaborators to develop the structures of positive student outcomes;
  • Reinforcing teaching and learning as a primary lever of positive impact on student achievement and growth by consistently visiting school sites/classrooms and participating in innovative problem solving that helps enact high-quality professional learning for all staff;
  • Guiding and coaching site leaders to build appropriate and dynamic teaching and learning systems that can be illustrated through observable actions, applicable artifacts, documentation and/or probative conversations with students and staff;
  • Using data to analyze the current status of student learning and to serve as a catalyst for benchmark of growth and evidence-based decision-making/practices;

Staff Supervision and Development:
This position serves as a role model for District leadership directly overseeing and supervising Certified and Classified staff in accordance with District policies and applicable laws. The Executive Director is charged with applying a staff development program that recognizes and supports both:
  • Student success as the primary focus;
  • Data informed decision making;
  • And intertwines the applied principles of collaborative adult learning
These duties encompass an expectation to develop other supervisors of certified and classified staff and include:
  • Working one on one with Directors to grow their instructional leadership capacity and to ensure that they have the support to attain effectiveness on the leadership standards;
  • Providing and brokering high quality research-based professional learning based on individual and group learning needs;
  • Modeling effective communication and engagement practices through high quality written and oral communication with site leaders and district staff including well-written supervisory documents, office communication, and daily correspondence.
In addition, supervising and evaluating is conducted in the framework of instructional program goals and expectations including a variety of human resources responsibilities but not limited to:
  • Interviewing, hiring, training, promoting, planning, and assigning work,
  • Conducting performance evaluations and instilling a motivational leadership culture within the District,
  • Coaching decisiveness in taking and communicating appropriate remedial actions regarding employee performance and conduct,
  • Addressing employee/student complaints and concerns and resolving problems.

Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in education or administration plus additional coursework required for certification or licensure*
    • * (Acceptable equivalent will be at the sole discretion of the District)
  • Minimum of five years of experience in building administration role or progressively responsible instructional based and central based administration;
  • Minimum of five years overseeing and supporting a Standards-Based academic system in a leadership role;
  • Proven experience working within a large organization to achieve a change vision or implementing change initiatives within a district or as a consultant serving a district;
  • Preference given for prior site leader experience in a Data-Informed and Continuous Improvement System
  • Attend and successfully complete all staff development training as required by state law or as directed by the CAO.
  • Valid Colorado Principal/Administrator's License.
  • Valid Colorado driver's license or valid Colorado Identification required.
  • Criminal background check required for hire.

260 days / year
