Job description

Summary:
Red River Valley Habitat for Humanity (RRVHFH) is seeking the next Executive Director as the principal leader reporting to the Board of Directors. The Red River Valley Habitat for Humanity , an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, is looking to grow our impact in the region and seeks a dynamic director that can shepherd growth through implementing strategic goals, plans, and fundraising. The position can be remote, or hybrid; however the Executive Director must reside within Grand Forks County, North Dakota or Polk County, Minnesota. Depending on funding, the position could lead to full time employment.

Position Description:
Reports to: The Board of Directors. The Board of Directors will perform an annual review of the Executive Director.

Job Classification: Exempt

Hours: Varied, flexible. This is a part-time position of approximately 18-24 hours each week. Occasional weekend and evening hours are required.

Requirements: Experience in nonprofit administration and fundraising is essential. Must be organized, able to meet deadlines, and capable of project management. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Applicant must be a self-starter who has the ability to interact well with partner families, other staff, board and committee members, and the community at large. A valid driver's license, reliable transportation and willingness to travel within the service area are required. The Executive Director will maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field, including training provided by Habitat for Humanity International and other affiliated organizations. Flexibility in working hours and computer knowledge are important. Knowledge in building, construction, project management, financial software such as Quickbooks, and mortgage lending is preferred.

Responsibilities

General Administration

  • Act as the chief administrator responsible for managing all aspects of affiliate operations.
  • Manage the affiliate organization and train, supervise, and recognize the paid and volunteer staff in the performance of their assigned duties.
  • Establish and maintain procedures, guidelines, and performance standards for all aspects of RRVHFH.
  • Maintain an environment that attracts, keeps, and motivates staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure communication of relevant issues flow among the Board of Directors, committee members, partner families, staff, and volunteers.
  • Ensure RRVHFH adheres to government regulations, laws, and HFHI policies.

Community Relations and Resource Development

  • Serve as a spokesperson for the affiliate, ensuring good media relationships.
  • Actively participate with appropriate community groups which share the goals of HFHI.
  • Establish and oversee a fundraising plan which includes fundraising events, donor engagement, corporate sponsorships, grant writing, and other resource development opportunities. Fundraising should aim to both sustain the annual budget and provide growth for RRVHFH.
  • Represent RRVHFH to interested communities, churches, businesses, groups, foundations, and community leaders.
  • Seek out, apply for, and manage grants.

Financial Management

  • Work with the staff and board in preparing a yearly budget. Ensure that RRVHFH operates within budgeted guidelines.
  • Ensure that adequate funds are available as needed to sustain the annual budget. Authorize expenditures within Board of Directors' approved budget.
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of sound financial practices.
  • Interact with the Board of Directors to ensure completion of audits and other financial activities.
  • Maintain confidential employee and partner family applicant records for RRVHFH.
  • Along with the mortgage servicer, responsible for homeowner mortgage payment issues (delinquent payments, foreclosures, etc.).

Program Management

  • Educating and working with potential partner families on their path to homeownership.
  • Ensure that the activities of the affiliate, its programs and goals are publicized.
  • Ensure program compliance with Board of Directors approved standard operating procedures, local laws and regulations, and HFHI policies.
  • Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with volunteers, home sponsors, partner families, community groups, and other organizations.

Committee Support and Guidance

  • Work with the board to establish committees and chairs.
  • Assist the committee chairs, and provide communication flow among committees, staff, volunteers, and the board as appropriate.
  • Monitor the progress of all committees and support their efficient operation.
  • As appropriate, attend committee meetings and assist committee members in completing their duties.

Board Support

  • Work with the Board President to prepare an agenda for board meetings.
  • Work with Board Treasurer to ensure proper financial tracking and reporting.
  • Assist the Board of Directors in making fundamental decisions, preparing strategic plans, and creating/maintaining policies.
  • Assist in the search for new board members and board officers as needed.
  • Other duties as needed.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Experience in nonprofit administration and fundraising
  • Self-starter who has the ability to interact well with partner families, board and committee members, and the community at large
  • Excellent written and oral skills; effective communicator
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to thrive as a team player
  • Willingness to learn and participate in continuing education
