Job Summary

The Executive Dean of Student Affairs is a dynamic and strategic leader responsible for shaping the future of our student body and enhancing the overall student experience. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, this position plays a pivotal role in creating a culture of excellence and making data-driven decisions at Harris-Stowe State University. The Executive Dean is tasked with fostering a vibrant and supportive campus environment that empowers students to excel academically, personally, and professionally.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise: Director of Residential Life, Student Engagement, Dean of Students, Director of Counseling Services, and Director of Health Services
  • Assist with building strong partnerships across campus to foster a culture of collaboration and shared responsibility for student success.
  • Lead initiatives to enhance student engagement, satisfaction, and overall student experience.
  • Implementing assessment tools and feedback mechanisms to continuously evaluate and improve Student Affairs programs and services will be crucial.
  • Assist in defining the strategic direction of Student Affairs at our institution.
  • Identify emerging trends in higher education and student development, and translate these into actionable plans that align with our institution's mission and values.
  • Develop strategies for accommodating student population growth while maintaining the quality of the student experience.
  • Lead efforts in collaborating with campus housing authorities and local real estate partners to explore innovative housing solutions.
  • Assist in crisis management and handling complaints
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and community leaders to enhance student opportunities.
  • Identify and cultivate funding opportunities through grants, donations, and partnerships to enhance student programs and scholarships.
  • Assist in develop and manage the budget for Student Affairs programs and services, ensuring responsible allocation of resources to support student success.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Student Affairs.


Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, or related field required; Doctorate degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of successful progressive professional experience, and previous experience in college Student Affairs & enrollment management.
  • Strong working knowledge and understanding of established professional codes of ethics and best practices for Student Affairs professionals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting inclusiveness and cultural competence; experience working with underrepresented students.
  • Proven leadership experience in enrollment management and Student Affairs.
  • Exemplary and proven organizational, leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Strong strategic thinking and data-driven decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and perform a variety of work activities as a productive team member as well as independently following direction given by supervisor.
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in enrollment management


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational ability and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Must have the ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse and demanding student and parent population.
  • Proficiency in computer skills including MS Word, Excel, databases, electronic communication, the Internet and web-based applications.
  • Knowledge of the principles of a Restorative Justice model of Conduct
  • Ability to work independently making decisions in student conduct cases and prioritizing work load.
  • Outstanding verbal, writing and presentation skills. Must be able to communicate and interact effectively with students, faculty, staff and all external constituencies.
  • Must be a self-starter who works well in a fast-paced, dynamic, team-oriented, environment
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational ability and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Must be perceptive and patient, with strong people skills and a willingness to assist others.
  • Ability to demonstrate ownership, accountability and teamwork.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Physical Requirements

  • Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle
  • Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body
  • Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a signification degree


Working Conditions and Environment

  • Work is routinely performed in a typical interior/office environment
  • Very limited or no exposure to physical risk
  • Occasional evening and weekend work during peak season.
