Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
  • Patrols an assigned area to aid in preventing crime and to enforce federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Responds to a wide variety of calls and complaints including burglaries, homicides, accidents, and other misdemeanors and felonies.
  • Observes, reports, and acts on conditions conducive to crime and danger such as checking buildings for security, stopping/warning city traffic violators, and checking suspicious persons and vehicles.
  • Enforces traffic laws, reports traffic hazards, and directs traffic flow when necessary.
  • Responds to radio calls, determines nature of call, and investigates the circumstances. Performs necessary action such as making arrests and transporting prisoners.
  • Provides assistance to the public in emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Administers first aid and requests medical service. Provides general information to the public on laws and ordinances. Assists individuals with complaints and inquiries or makes referrals to the appropriate authority or agency.
  • Prepares a variety of records and reports regarding property impounded, accidents, offenses, and damage to property.
  • Prepares and maintains activity logs and other related similar types of information as a personal reference record of incidents and details.
  • Performs investigative assignments; conducts interviews of victims, witnesses, and suspects; photographs crime scene; collects and documents evidence; may arrest suspects.
  • Participates in crime prevention efforts by giving lectures and maintaining a high degree of visibility. Makes presentations of civic organizations to encourage public support for department programs.
  • Appears in court and testifies as necessary
  • Maintains proficiency in the use of police related equipment
  • May assist in the training of new officers.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications & Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
ATTENTION: To be considered for a lateral deputy position you must meet ALL of the following minimum eligibility requirements. If you do not meet all of these requirements, you cannot be considered for a lateral position.   • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Valid Washington State driver license.
  • First Aid Certificate.
  • Must meet required physical and mental standards and all civil service requirements.
  • Must meet all City of Prosser Police Department Recruitment Standards.
  • Must have graduated from the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Academy for law enforcement. If not, must have graduated from a state certified law enforcement officer training academy and be able to challenge the process for an equivalency certification in Washington State.
  • Must have successfully completed your probationary period with your current or previous law enforcement employer.
  • Must have been continuously employed by your present or previous employer as a full time civilian law enforcement officer for not less than 12 months, and have not less than 24 months total full time law enforcement experience. You must have been employed as a full time law enforcement officer within the last 24 months.
DISQUALIFIER INFORMATION: Prior to employment, certified applicants will complete a thorough criminal history check, personal history background interview, polygraph, physical (medical), and a psychological test.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations and ordinances as they pertain to law enforcement duties and responsibilities.
  • Skill in use and care of firearms, motor vehicles, and other police equipment

  • Ability to write clear and accurate reports .
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

RETIREMENT SYSTEM (DRS)

DEFERRED COMPENSATION Voluntary Deferred Compensation Plans are available through Washington Deferred Compensation Plan (DCP) and ICMA.

0 - 4 years 8.67 hours
5 - 9 years 12 hours
10 years + 12 hours per month plus .67 per year
SICK LEAVE Employees accumulate eight (8) hours per month.
LONGEVITY Regular full time employees, who have been employed by the City for 10 years, receive ten dollars ($10.00) per month for every year of service thereafter. The maximum amount, which can be earned per month, shall be one hundred dollars ($100.00).
