NATURE OF WORK
This is responsible technical work in the property and evidence unit of the Fremont Police Department.
Work also involves receiving incoming property and evidence. This is a non-sworn position that performs tasks relating to the handling, storage, disposal, packaging, and mailing of evidence and property of the Fremont Police Department. The work also involves performing tasks and maintenance on various department evidence gathering equipment and computers. Supervision is received from an administrative superior.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
- Receives incoming property and evidence; logs items in and records when items are checked out and returned; maintains precise documentation of chain of custody
- Oversees the disposal of evidence as directed, while ensuring it conforms with policy, State, Federal Laws and/or court directives.
- Research case history’s in order to purge items of evidence and/or to dispose of property.
- Maintain mobile video inventory for police vehicles; digital cameras, cruiser cameras and any other video devices used by the department.
- Makes copies of all police body camera footage by burning the footage to DVD format for all videos required by policy or requested.
- Maintain and service breath testing equipment.
- Maintain and service cruiser mobile data terminals.
- Develop and implement quality evidence storage and inventory procedures.
- Attend classes and seminars on evidence handling and equipment maintenance.
- Performs other work which is consistent with the essential functions of the job.
- Delivers evidence or property to various state laboratories around the state as necessary.
- Maintains or services any other piece of equipment used by police as directed by the Chief of Police or his designee.
- Knowledge of Modern office procedures, methods, and computer software and equipment.
- Knowledge of Computer systems and ability to install and upgrade computer hardware and software.
- Knowledge of Common office software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
- Knowledge of the Principles and practices of records maintenance.
- Knowledge of Police terminology and procedures.
- Knowledge of Policies and procedures of the Police Department as related to the processing and managing of police records and evidence
- Knowledge of Police evidence handling procedures and the latest methods for handling and storage of evidence.
- Knowledge of Police video systems, both in-car and body.
- Ability to Must be able to read, write, and understand the English language.
- Ability to Speak on the radio and telephone to be easily understood.
- Ability to Work and perform duties without direct supervision and independently make decisions.
- Ability to Must be able to maintain effective working relationships with other workers.
- Ability to Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to Must maintain the confidentiality of information exposed to while performing duties assigned.
Graduation from senior high school; or equivalent GED; with some course work in criminal justice, public administration or similar experience in law enforcement; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Employee must possess and maintain of a valid Nebraska Driver’s License when operating a vehicle.
- Must comply with any other requires of the City of Fremont.
- Employee must be able to pass a background check, including fingerprinting.
- Due to the requirements for access to various Criminal Justice databases, must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be available to be called in to work outside regular schedule to assist with evidence collection, etc.
